Are humans biological machines?
    #2478507 - 03/27/04 04:35 PM (20 years, 6 days ago)

I've been quite concerned with this for the past few weeks. So much can be traced to brain chemistry...emotions (behavior, personality, etc)...they're all easily influenced with a new cocktail of hormones (and the like). This idea is obviously pessimistic (and I know I'm not the first to wonder this).

The reason this topic has been on my mind lately is because I've met someone. I'll spare everyone the cliches (but she is incredible). What's interesting is how I've become aware of how my behavior is changing since meeting her (my thoughts focus on her quite often). Yes, it's obvious that I may be falling for her...but what does that really mean? That I've become addicted to the way she makes me feel? Where's the magic? What is love? Is it just another cocktail to influence me?

The only thing that I wonder about is how are our brains energized? Scientists have never been able to create living matter from non-living matter. Living structures are said BY SCIENTISTS to be driven by an "unknown force" They have yet to figure out what that is. As for everything else like how we think, behave, and how we feel...that can all be related to brain chemistry yes.

Maybe that will make you feel a little better about your point of view.

some say we are powered by the energy of love. Some say we have our own personal star up in the heavens that give us the source of energy we need through our 8th chakra into our minds. Some say its got to do with ATP. It is energy it is electric in ways we are machines, but more then just machines.

The only thing that I wonder about is how are our brains energized?

It is called glyocogen, a sugar; a carbon-based fuel source.

What is pessimistic about seeing things as they are?

biological machines = rhetoric.

Maybe if you said bio machines, because there is nothing logical about humans. See what I did there?

I'll spare everyone the cliches (but she is incredible).
You had it right when you said that she makes you feel incredible. It is your reaction that is important. When people have a hard break-up, they no longer say the other person was incredible. A few months ago, I was a "rare diamond" to someone; now I am an insensitive jerk. I didn't change; only the person's perception.

Yes, it's obvious that I may be falling for her...but what does that really mean? That I've become addicted to the way she makes me feel? Where's the magic? What is love? Is it just another cocktail to influence me?
Put the philosophy aside as this rare treat only occurs a few times in most people's lives. Enjoy the ride while it lasts, my brother.

Swami? Did you read the whole post... or just that portion of a sentance? : P  If that carbon fuel was the force that makes things alive, scientists would be able to create living organisms.  :smirk:

Using your logic, your car must run on some mysterious spirit energy, because you do not know how to make gasoline and build an engine from scratch.

The engines turns because of electromagnetism. That's pretty mysterious/spirtitual to me.

I guess that's why I got an A in electromechanical systems and you didn't.

What I was really trying to do was exchange monosyllabic expressions of arrogance.

you: ah, yes!
me: hmmm!

Yes, humans are biological machines.  We are not special.  We have no more of a soul than anything else.  We are all part of the same greater existence.  We are all one with the divine energy of the cosmos.  Really pessimistic outlook, huh?

So we're nothing but a buncha slimey robots that multiply themselves through chemical exchanges and consume resources around us at an alarming rate??? I dont think thats pessamistic i think thats just realistic. And it sure take alot of the pressure off. I rather just be an electricaly charged talking meatbag then a "soul" who has a "job" to do in order to get into "heaven" after it "dies"..

biological machines = rhetoric...
Ed is funny (and special)

What is pessimistic about seeing things as they are?
Hmm, good point.  I suppose that part of me hopes for some sort of magical mystery in life to exist...I always imagined love to be one of those mysteries.

You had it right when you said that she makes you feel incredible...When people have a hard break-up, they no longer say the other person was incredible.
Right on...good call.

Enjoy the ride while it lasts, my brother.
Right on.  Wow, thanks

When you begin to see your body as a machine and its responses to events as programs in the machine you are starting to view the Universe in a more balanced, objective way. It's uncomfortable to many people who aren't ready to deal with reality on that level. Most people are too caught up in the human experience to objectively step back and observe the experience. It's a hard step to take, from subjectivity to objectivity, but it's a natural part of the Universal learning cycle and all must go through it eventually. It's depressing for a time, but after the depression passes you'll be much wiser and more comfortable with your reality.
