lye grain soak?
    #24713560 -

if a lye soak works for straw prep, and some of us soak our grains, im wondering if anyone has tried to lye soak grains and skip p.c.'ing them? when i first started trying to use straw i had more contam issues with it than i had ever had with anything else, but once i got the lye shit down it was no problem. so i figure that straw musta been pretty dirty and if so then the lye must work pretty damn good, so maybe it'd work with grain prep?
now we all know lye soak straw is technically a "pasteurization tek" and p.c.'ing is sterilizing , so lets not get side tracked on that

Side tracked on the part that is why we don't? Lol

We sterilize grain so the lye part is totally irrelevant. The pressure cooker would sterilize straw too with or without lye treatment first.

Grain doesn't need chemical pasteurization before sterilization. It would only make the PH of your grains less optimal.

I appreciate the response but you totally missed my point, I said to skip the grain sterilization

Exactly. We sterilize grain we don't pasteurise it point moot and continued with a better explanation

its a good goddamn thing not everyone had your mentality 20 years ago or wed all still be using aquariums with drip lids in them. "this is what we do, because this is what we do and nobody should change what we do so there's no point in discussing trying something new"
and fuck, im pretty sure i said "now we all know lye soak straw is technically a "pasteurization tek" and p.c.'ing is sterilizing , so lets not get side tracked on that" and isnt that all your doing???

I'd say the lye will render the grain an unfavorable food source for mycelium.

i thought about that too, but its not unfavorable for mycelium to colonize straw

I'm all for thinking outside the box and trying new things. Some things are just dumb. We look for improvements not steps backwards. Grains get sterilization not pasteurization. There's no benefits to finding a way to pasteurise grain. That's like driving your car in reverse all the way to the store. Reverse has its place but not for traveling. Besides that chemical pasteurization is the shittiest pasteurization. And lye would saponify any lipids oils or fats in the grain.

I'm so closed minded. I grow in unmodified tubs and float them to harvest. And changed the way people think about soaking for endospores.

I highly fucking doubt YOU are the reason ppl soak for endospores... and reverse has it's place , technicaly a forklift runs in reverse , and there is no way in hell any vehicle running forward could move into the places a forklift could. also while we're on the " we do what we do because we do it " subject, everyone says you have to pasturize substrate but I and a local buddy have way at better results from sterilizing subs, just don't post it because of shit like this.
like lizardwizard said, you probably didn't have time to read my entire post but still tried to reply and be "helpfull" .. I say that's bullshit , if u can't read the entire post and understand the question then don't reply because othwise you just look like someone who like to hear themselves talk. like my old signature said " those who can't do, teach. and impress themselves with their high post count". haha, I'm soooo impressed by your opinion on a subject you didn't take the time to read , and that YOU are the whole reason ppl soak grain for endospores, golly gee, I wish I wasn't so far back in line to suck your dick

1. If you took the time to look I suggest that people SHOULDN'T soak for endospore germination.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21604725

I go right from dry grains to sterilized grains out of the pressure cooker in under 6 hours. there's no reason to soak grains to try to germinate endospores

2. I said reverse has it's place. like in a forklift for instance

3.

If you can spawn sterile I think it would be better. Thermophile bacteria isn't a detriment but its definitely not symbiotic. So if you can eliminate all bacteria and spawn sterile the poo probably performs better if I had to make a guess

I've always figured sterile substrate would do better (if working with manure)

If you have a pressure cooker then why even look for another method. PC does as good as necessary.

Maybe if I was trying to do a grow in the zombie apocalypse and didn't have certain supplies.

it's not a topic that only applies to psylocibe cultivation either, so why put it here? whatever...
u know, I'm sure some cavemen didn't approve of the guy that wanted to see if he could make fire another way besides flint, because it works, so why change? but here we are today with bic lighters and the internal combustion engine. always pisses me off to see threads where ppl discourage others from trying new shit because "we know what works" , but how did we get to that point? by trying a new way. there's another thread where an ol boy over soaked his grain and was thinking about trying to noc it up anyhow. everybody discouraged him because it'd probably fail, PROBABLY, no one knew for absolute certainty, so why not give it a go and see what happens? it's only grain and some spores which neither of are hard to come by nor expensive.sadly, ppl have a group mentality these days and too many ppl follow the advise of groups, but as the song goes "when you listen to fools, the mob rules".
and know what's worse than no advise? bad advise. esp if its because someone doesn't take the time to understand the question

here's the description of the advanced mycology page..
"Advanced Mycology (7 viewing)For people with experience in mushroom cultivation, this forum is dedicated to the discussion of experimental procedures, advanced cultivation techniques and mushroom science."...
DEDICATED TO THE DISCUSSION OF EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDEDURES it says. huh, seems  like maybe some ppl just didn't want my post in their board???
