What is the consensus on grain soak time?
    #3282582 - 10/27/04 02:41 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I've tried a few different kinds of grain, and I'm really wondering what the fuck is okay for soak time in order to let the endospores germinate. I have let some go 36 hours and the grain started to grow. But letting grain go that long, then PC'ing 90 minutes has failed me at times.
Granted, my glovebox isn't perfect, but, my question: My first rye attempt, this past summer, when I was a total newb, was soaked 24 hours, I used a rubbermaid tub with a plastic shield (akin to a salad bar sneeze shield, the bottom 3 inches were "open" so I could work in there) went fine when I inoculated them. I used this same setup again for G2G. Only one out of ten pint jars contamed with this.
Now, I've done the whole cardboard box, hand holes, gloves, towel keeping air out around the glove entry holes, spraying with Oust inside, then Lysol, using rubbing alcohol, and I seem to be having more contams. It's really fucked. Can someone offer any advice? Thank you.

24 hrs, with no additional simmer. Has worked the best for me so far. I was using Rye Berries.

I have used searched around, and can't find any soak times for wheat grains. Treat the wheat grains like rye grains? 24 hours for these grains also? They seem to be bout half the size of the rye grains, so should I soak longer/shorter?

(sorry to bring up old topic but didn't want to make a new one if it
could be answered here)

Thanks

The wheat berries I used were essentially the same as rye. Magash has said 24 hours to let the endospores germinate. Some people say 12 or 16 is okay, too. I don't know, though, because I used some WBS and did everything the same--I thought--and contammed a bunch of jars. 24 should be fine for any grain as I understand it. It's the simmer time that's different for different grains, I think.
