Grain soaking and post inoculation questions
    #2955923 - 08/02/04 12:58 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I was wondering if soaking the grain before simmering or PCing it is really necessary? Don't the endospores die in the PCing? I have read Magesh's very useful documant regarding the subject.

Also, how ofter should I sake the Jars once the spores have germinated?

Soaking is neccessary if you want to kill the endospores. The endospores are vary hardy and survive temps well above the pc temps. Once germinated though, they are succeptible to the pc temps. So yes it's a good idea to.

As far as shaking, I believe once when it is around 25 percent colonized. Don't make the mistake I did and put too much grain in the jar. Makes it hard to shake and break apart. I also had a batch of jars where I filled it 3/4 of the way and the grain was lying loosely in there. IT colonized very fast that way, but I think I wasted some jar real estate. But it's easy as hell to shake and colonizes super fast.

Quick trivia for you!

Question:  When the Applo Mission from the moon  returned do you know what the number one concern was???

Endospores!! Yep they were concerned with alien bateria traveling thru space for millions of years and wiping out mankind.

If Nasa has found that endospores will last for a very long time in a complete vacume, then they are hardy little bastards!

Scientests in Egypt have found endospores from 2000 years ago very much alive and germinated them.

So yes it is very important to germinate them by soaking overnight

Shaking the jars for me is done as soon as I inoculate them it spreads the spores everywhere and by the thrid day the whole frikin jar starts to look fuzzy and I never shake them again because they are done in 8-10 days.

But everybody does things a little different.
