Re: Have the Materialists been defeated on PS&P? [Re: Kurt]

Victor's question, "Did the materialists lose?", I thought implies that all the champions were materialists, at least the three examples he gave.

Auto-Summary
The post discusses the concept of materialism and its role in explaining the origins of thought and mental experience. The author argues that materialism, which posits that everything is contained in conceptualized terms of a theoretical field, is necessary for debating positions. However, the author also highlights the challenge of explaining subjective experiences, such as the redness of red or the feeling of pain, which cannot be quantified or explained through objective terms. The post suggests that consciousness, while being part of the physical world, remains ontologically subjective and cannot be fully reduced to quantifiable terms. The author concludes that discursive thought is tied to our objectification of the world, but acknowledging subjective experiences does not contradict the establishment of physical cosmology. Instead, it adds an anomalous layer to our understanding of the natural world.

I don't really think I know what Laughingdog meant and was joking. People are hedged up in expressing positions, and counter positions but they are not saying what they mean, it seems to me. Maybe he was commenting on this, when he said that things seem to be spouted off, but then we are all in this same boat then, however many leaky spouts we are.

I still don't think a position can be debated too well if materialism (or what isn't even yet given a name or form as opposed to it) is not stated at some point along the line. Redgreenvines implied earlier an idea of materialism has something to do with explaining the origin of thought/mind, where we might take one of two ontological positions; one which is right and the other wrong.

It seems like an understandable response to the OP; and kind of a capitulation or championing of terms, more than an explanation of the origins of a physical world. A position on this kind of dualism (the kind where some kind of reasoning assumes some idea of the primacy or importance of mental experience, and from that requires us to clarify what sort of entity it is) could be materialism in the sense that everything is contained in some conceptualized terms of a theoretical field.

On Ontological Subjectivity (Added response)

I think that the concept of "thought" is mostly conventional and artificially conceived at face value. It relates to a discursive or epistemic practice. For instance, someone might say "I think..." and what projects and stands out initially, is not an entity of one kind or another, but a shared discourse. If I stand next to a tree and say "I think..." that it has certain properties, and someone else from a different position says something else, we do not say it is just a matter of difference in perceptions, or points of view, or that we don't see the same thing and chalk things up to subjective aspect, from different experiences. We can understand we perceive the same object in front of each of us, proceeding somewhat methodically. We conjecture and interrogate the sorts of properties we think exist in an object in terms of a common reality in sum. But the point is that in this sense "thought" occurs entirely externally, in a convention of discourse.

Of course if an approximate locus of these perceptions and mental processes in thought or thinking things relates to the field of objects, we are part of this field or general discursive space as well. We can turn the subject to object relation on itself to where "I think..." or the subject of conscious experience in general is broached as an object too. So thinking discursively as a convention generally allows for a concrete empirical investigation in the new terms, where minds are considered objects of investigation as much as anything else. So much could be said for the capitulation of materialism, in these terms. If conscious experience is included in the terms of the world there is nothing left to explain outside of this, or seemingly as being of mysterious or metaphysical origins.

But to say that in some ways consciousness in the field also is beyond possible quantification, (even if it is capitulated to a physical field) also generally makes sense. Essentially qualitative experiences, like the redness of the color red, or any other similar, partly qualitative experience; like of pain or pleasure, or hot or cold, are not explainable by objective quantification. Those quantifications of neurology and wavelengths in a field, come to an end at a point, before explaining anything about the redness of the color red. But many of us see and experience something we name and point our finger at as red. How do we know we have similar or the same experiences? This is not obscure. There is a spectrum of wavelengths and colors that are found in the objecticely physically structured relations. These experiences themselves though would be ontologically (in their basic existence and reality) subjective to experience, at the same time.

A conjecture moves back and forth between a consciousness/subject's circumspection of objects in the field to what we find in the field in a particular way as mind, and what can be understood. As a whole what was identified in the first place was discursive and this is really what we look to as thought. We do not only look to cognitive function and behavior in a reduction. Looking for a reduction of conscious subjects to quantifiable terms in the field as cognition, works where it does. Memory, association, would closely surround and relate to perception as the main place and drive of the mental function, but aside from function there is a consideration of what it is "like" to be conscious in general, what it is to experience which is the existing subjective basis of phenomenal experience.

From what I can see, cognitive behaviorists that look for a physicalist reduction offer no account for the ontological subjectivity. Quantification does not imply giving an origin and explanation of any possible domain of conscious experience even if terms may be capitulated. So respectively, Subjectivity in this sense is not necessarily otherworldly, and it is not presenting some essential challenge to meeting in perceptions and understanding a natural world, but it is anomalous and part of mental experience. It is what is brought forth in poetic experience.

Discursive thought is tied to and conditioning what we tend to objectify. That there are some subjective experiences that stand as anomolous, doesn't contradict the establishing of physical cosmology, but it does contradict the unspoken sentiment behind what capitulation of terms might seem to mean. It is not consistent to say everything we know as thought has a material reality and basis, even though that material basis is what we will be able to talk about intelligibly in all particular cases.

Proof of God... everything you are is continuous with That, infinitely so. Infinitely intertwined with God. You cannot escape God, everything we do is ignorance. The greatest ignorance is that "I am here". It's also the first and the last. All thought is based on "I am here". "I am not here" is insane, stupid. It implies you can be. You can't. There is only God.

God witnesses phenomena, such as "I". Such as suffering. It is witnessed only so far as it is pretended to be there, in an almost dissatisfied, nonchalant way.

God is the dream of Paradise, it is always at its peak, only through a kind of magic God undergoes innumerable sufferings, fooling Itself like a child.

God is the wild eruption of sheer mystery. Why is God? I think you want to know. It's so beautiful that there is only God, you can feel it. But more beautiful still is why am I? All these faces, all these souls. Why is there only me?

If you were to become what is, you would not know what peace has befallen you. I have touched it briefly and I crave to go back, but all my fear is gone.

I see the departure from an embodied being as Descartes greatest mistake.

Quote:
Can We Know Objective Reality?

The subjective is characterized primarily by perceiving mind. The objective is characterized primarily by physical extension in space and time. The simplest sort of discrepancy between subjective judgment and objective reality is well illustrated by John Locke’s example of holding one hand in ice water and the other hand in hot water for a few moments. When one places both hands into a bucket of tepid water, one experiences competing subjective experiences of one and the same objective reality. One hand feels it as cold, the other feels it as hot. Thus, one perceiving mind can hold side-by-side clearly differing impressions of a single object. From this experience, it seems to follow that two different perceiving minds could have clearly differing impressions of a single object. That is, two people could put their hands into the bucket of water, one describing it as cold, the other describing it as hot. Or, more plausibly, two people could step outside, one describing the weather as chilly, the other describing it as pleasant.

We confront, then, an epistemological challenge to explain whether, and if so how, some subjective impressions can lead to knowledge of objective reality. A skeptic can contend that our knowledge is limited to the realm of our own subjective impressions, allowing us no knowledge of objective reality as it is in itself.

I think it's more of an attitude that viktor is talking about than an actual disbelief or doubt in the material world. It's thinking you know what you're talking about because a certain textbook or authority figure says it's true. Not that that's a problem, but when it gets to the point of ridiculing others beliefs, that's where I have a problem. OC and Icelander both did this.  One specific example is when Ice would always belittle circastes. One time I PM'd him and he tried to get me to team up with him to put circastes down. I'll never forget that. Circastes was nice dude and didn't deserve that.

Materialism overshadows the mystery of life. It leads to doubt overpowering curiosity and imagination. It reduces discussion to what is socially acceptable knowledge and scares off dreamers.

Yeah both of those guys liked to bully the younger posters. Icelander in particular would hound some of them off the forum, stalking them from thread to thread. There has been a noticeable increase in the quality of interaction here with them gone, and a noticeable decrease in the raw entertainment value.

What is material? What is god? What are dimensions of consciousness? We don't have an agreeable definition of these terms, so how can we proceed with this conversation?

I admit it is a problem that some word definitions are loose and misleading. the conversation is not advanced, but it can begin, and when it begins we struggle to define terms.

'material' so far relates to that which is measurable using standardized measurement tools.

'god' is a spirit or force that pervades everything - not material unless it is all matter and all material processes taken together.

'dimensions' are measurable extensions from a point.

'consciousness' equates with mind, includes experience and memories, ehibits a sense of streaming or 'stream of consciousness' and is different in different 'states of mind'

'mind states' in science typically is loose and refers to any configuration or state that the brain may be in at any moment while

'states of mind' usually can apply consistently to ordinary waking, sleeping, dreaming, variously stoned and emotional 'states of mind' - for consistency I have found that these states of mind have a high correlation with the SALVIA states of mind, and that there is a smooth transition between all of them.

"dimensions' are measurable extensions from a point."

I don't understand why you would throw "measurable" in there. How do we measure expanded dimensions of reality? By taking hallucinogens?

I could say the same for vitalism, to give up on the real world and dive headfirst into imagination, fantasy and implicit perceptions.

Spinoza's god for me uncovers my own mystery of life and leads me to a sense of revitalisation, understanding, knowledge and empowerment within the natural world. It reduces my unknown to the naturally knowable which I and presumable others alike would consider socially acceptable and merited to believe. To cast aside what leads to the idea that thunder could be caused by Thor.

Vitalism undermines centuries of mankind's strive for knowledge, centuries of accomplishment, advancement and discovery. It leads to a lack of curiosity over what is real and imbues itself solely in wonder and imagination rather than balancing itself with a sense of realism; it reduces the discussion to what is felt and what is unknown, it scares off reason and replaces it with faith that the known is unknowable.

To say we, our minds, are not a part of this world, nor physically, nor chemically, I think is to take away from it.

I was going to touch on that and say on one end of the spectrum you have materialism, and on the other the mysterious.
We both know what happens when yiu tread to far to both extremes. A healthy balance as they say!

I wouldn't say there's a spectrum of materialism and vitalism, only one of understanding over which is a more accurate depiction of the world around and within us.

Energy is pretty mysterious and it comes in various forms though these are not immaterial or unknowable so I don't see how an immaterial balance can come about.

Too far into vitalism and I'd assume some serious schizophrenia or a new uprising of scientology, too far into materialism and maybe a greater chance of a Nobel prize or some improved agricultural practices.

Quote:
As I argued in my previous post, if you want to call yourself a believer in neo-Darwinian evolution, then you have to believe that it is an all-encompassing theory of living things, just as the atomic theory is an all-encompassing theory of chemistry. You have to believe that the theory of evolution is capable of explaining all of the characteristics of each species of organism. The theory of evolution stands or falls on its claim to be a complete theory. As Theodosius Dobzhansky memorably put it in a 1973 essay in The American Biology Teacher (volume 35, pages 125-129): “Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution.” Consequently, if you believe that there are organisms on this planet, such as human beings, that possess characteristics which evolution is unable to account for, then you cannot call yourself an evolutionist, and you certainly cannot call yourself a bona fide Darwinist.

Human beings are animals. One feature which characterizes human beings is consciousness. (It may characterize some other animals as well.) Consequently, if you believe that consciousness cannot be explained in materialistic terms, then you cannot call yourself a consistent Darwinian evolutionist.

By that criterion, there are at least twenty-one Nobel Laureate scientists who don’t qualify as genuine Darwinian evolutionists. I’m talking about Nobel scientists who were “human exceptionalists”: people who did not believe, or who doubted, that the theory of evolution would ever be able to explain human consciousness. These scientists’ beliefs about the mind are a matter of public record. I’ve already discussed John Eccles’ views on evolution in my second post, so I won’t count him again on my list.

The belief that Darwinism cannot explain the human mind has been derided by the philosopher Daniel Dennett as “mind creationism” – a position still espoused even today, by scientists such as the famous contemporary paleontologist, Simon Conway Morris. To be sure, not all of the Nobel Prize winners listed below believed in a Creator. Marie Curie, for instance, was an agnostic. But the belief that consciousness cannot be explained by the theory of evolution is just as much of a threat to Darwinists as belief in a supernatural Creator. For this reason, I think it is fair to include the twenty-one Nobel scientists listed below with Intelligent Design theorists and creationists, because their views on consciousness place them outside the pale of what any evolutionist can accept.

This is a great question.
I put in "measurable" because once we 'define' a material phenomenon, such as direction along an axis or time line (in the case of standard dimensions) we can locate "tools" with which to measure the 'dimensions' or extents (beginning and ends) of forms that conform to those dimensions.

Dimensions as experienced in psychedelic states of mind are less well defined
than dimensions in physics, but this forum and this website attracts many people who leave anecdotal evidence (trip reports) and comments that can be used to help define the experience of psychedelic dimensions.

So to answer your question in standardized consensual terms - this is a work in progress.

My personal (non-standardized) observation of the experience of psychedelic dimensions is related to increments (subjectively measurable units) associated with layers that are not apparent when not psychedelically enhanced.
More layers, more of "that dimension".

Subjective experience of psychedelic dimensions by people who are stoned is usually accompanied with interpretations and attribution of meanings - and with that I usually need to take more time to clarify what is happening, and a person's investment in those meanings usually interferes with establishing the physical aspect (layers of persisting experience) of the experienced psychedelic dimension since emotional investment and ego fight against looking at experience or consciousness as anything but non-material.

Those who believe psychedelic states are proof of God stuff would say that.

Personally I am more concerned with the tool that can be used to illustrate the layers of experience as physical artifacts, and measure the extension of them through time in a reproducible way, so that we can all understand better who we are.

To date that tool has been discussions and my own subjective observation and counting - this is not good enough!

Some laboratory work with high resolution electro-encephalography is beginning (for brain to computer interfacing), so this is a likely area in which some substantive results will emerge in the next decade or so.

The lab steps that will illustrate psychedelic dimensions will include:
1. an analysis of cerebral electrical-field imaging (hi-res 2-d momentary snaps of activity) in series over time.
2. testing with psychedelic and non-psychedelic subjects.
3. calibration and normalization of results.
4. detection and measurement of residual "after-images" that persist correlated with dosage.
5. qualitative analysis of dimensional artifacts - by correlating subjects' anecdotal reports with hi-res series of eeg's.

so far some primitive experiments with live cat brain correlation of vision in the brain with live video of the same view has been done, but the resolution is too poor and the need for destructive skull removal is not an acceptable procedure with human testing.

I also think it makes as much sense to trim back some of these arguments that are loosely based on general disagreement, more than actual terms. Things would be easier to follow.

Sudly, you disagree with "vitalism" but who expressed this? I saw you mention it on the first page but it sounds like something you read and want to project in concept, more than much of an argument against anything anyone remotely expressed.

I understand that this thread is pretty associative, myself but if you wouod come a little closer to actual arguments, and away from just projecting something you read and want people to identify with things would be better. High dogma, sometimes has nothing to do with the particular theories, and what is true, but this sort of attached attitude and identification with literalism and authority. I looked up "vitalism" and I don't see anyone expressing this idea here.

Seeing as this is a thread about materialism and seemingly non-materialism(dunno what's in between) it seems fitting to use such words. And if you disagree with vitalism then join the crew!

Quote:
One view supported by several neurophilosophers including Paul and Patricia Churchland claims that in the eyes of posterity the 'problem of consciousness' will look not unlike the 'problem of life'. There are those who say that consciousness mysterians are the modern-day equivalent of vitalists who believed life had to be dependent on a force or principle distinct from purely chemical or physical forces, and that it depended on a non-physical inner force.
