Hey Beatrice, my friend is having the same problem with insects on his EQ's that are growing outside. He has yet to find a solution to the problem. If you figure out any ways to eradicate these bugs short of using TNT post it please, and I'll do the same.

Are you sure that the problem is not your casing layer of vermiculite? Vermiculite can compact easily and make it impossible for the mycelium to fruit through it. For the bugs, you might try some diatomaceaous earth. You can get it at a garden shop, and it is used by organic gardeners for pest control. I don't know if it will have any negative effects on the mushroom, but it is non-toxic to humans. You at least won't have to worry about it harming you.

Thanks for your replies. I'm afraid it's too late the bugs are all throughout the substrate and it's almost all gone. So sad, but will try that diatom. earth next time.
