Dung cakes
    #399552 - 09/20/01 09:13 PM (23 years, 6 months ago)

I have seen a few pics of people growing cakes with dung. Is there a ratio of dung you add or do you simply replace the normal amount of BRF for dung?
I know allot of people think that I am nuts to continue dealing with cakes, knowing that I am having success with casing rye grain, but I really enjoy working with them. I am going to run a test using 12 of each of the following cakes. Dung, organic compost, BRF, dark rye flour and straw to see if there will be any significant difference.
Thank you for takig the time to read this and I hope you can help to answer my question.
Cheers,

Beans, beans the magical fruit...

Just do your standard PF cakes......... then when they are 100 % colonized crumble them in a zip lock bag with equal part horse or cow crap. I think is horse crap is better consistency.I dampen the dung and then nuke in a casserole dish for 10 minutes.... let cool completely. Then crumble your cakes  to about marble size pieces with equal parts dung in the plastic bag . Put bulk substrate in whatever size container fits nicely so it`s about 2 inches thick. I put a wet verm layer on the bottom of foil pan first. Then cover the entire thing with aluminum foil with a few holes in it. Check it in 24 hours...... mycelia hauls ass through BRF/dung substrates. Then case with straight verm or 50/50.Flushes are prolific and shrooms are thick stemmed and much larger on the average compared to most plain cake shroomies.... good luck. Once you succeed at dung/brfcake substrates and casings you`ll never go back IMHO .........good luck

Id have to agree - the best way to use manure/dung is as a bulk substrate as it is cheap and easy and you can spawn heaps of it.
Incidentally i did an experiment like yours, where i made halfpint cakes of manure (substituted for brf PF style), BRF, rye and millet.
The Millet kicked arse, BRF came second (lots of skinny shroomies, rye grew some nice chunky babies. Manure gave the smallest yields out of all four at 250mls - i got three flushes of two or three very large shrooms but thats it.
Basically, despite what you might have been told, manure will yield far less than any other substrate in half-pint/pin amounts.
Manure however as a bulk substrate is very easy and cheap to prepare, so is well worth it.

Small fruits in dung?..... hmmm.. maybe it`s some environment thingie... air exchange?. to much CO2? not sure.. I`ve always seen HUGE shrooms in any of my dung substrates.. monsters compared to my PF cake ones.
