Looks good. I would use 50/50 casing. Just lay the slices like so: |-------| | O O O | |O O O O| |_______|------------------ ..... LEGALIZE ..... See my pictures here.

My hampster always breaks the cakes up (1/2" pieces). Does slicing them up and leaving them in larger pieces affect the yeild? Please let me know.------------------ Cogito, ergo sum

You would probably get a better yield(although not much) by crumbling them. It takes a little longer for the crumbled ones to recover though.------------------ ..... LEGALIZE ..... See my pictures here.

That's some of the info I'm looking for (yield, and so on). Everything I've read suggests that overhandling the colonized substrate leads to bruising or damaged pins. I'm guessing that a clean slice from a sharp knife would do less damage - but how much less I can't say. Reading and getting advice is great, but actually doing the deed is what teaches the real lessons. Any other info or advice or even comments about the technique illustrated in the diagram above would help. I'll definitely post results with photos when the first flush comes around. - Insomnia ------------------ I CHOKED LINDA LOVELACE!

My friend crumbles his cakes and he's never seen brusing. I think you are confusing colonized substrate with fruiting cakes. Fruiting cakes (ones that have mushrooms on them) will bruise if overhandled. Also, you can't really damage any pins seeing as no pins are present on the cakes when you crumble them. What you have outlined is basically what Ryche Hawk describes on his site. He cuts the cakes into slices and then fills in any gaps with some crumbled cake. So yes, it will work, and the yield will be good. ------------------ -snarf

Crazy idea...Try using a bit of fine (but sturdy) wire to cut through the cake. or, get one of those fancy cheese slicers, with a handle and a bit of sturdy wire. "Cheese Grommit, we have to go somewhere where there's cheeeeese!"

This is all outlined in the 50/50+ casing tek. From lots and lots of experimenting over the years, I have found slicing them in 3/4" to 1" thick slices, laying in trays, then filling in the empty places with a few crumbled peices will give much better results and yields. The mycelium network recovers and establishes itself much faster as well, less chance of contams from overhandling and more broken substrate being exposed...etc.. etc..-peace- www.thehawkseye.com

I think this method will work out best for now anyway... I'm getting married next month and would just hate to find my future mother-in-law lit off her ass on home-grown magic.Anyway, assuming 2-3 weeks for first flush harvest, they should be ready in time. I'm not as concerned about further flushes because of the time constraint. Thanks! ------------------ I CHOKED LINDA LOVELACE!

interesting point. logically, then, one could case whole cakes in the matter ryche described as if they were slices some 3 inches thick, like a 6 pack and fill in the gaps w/chunks. that would elminate slicing and recovery, give a much greater spawn depth and lessen chances of contamination. in theory. ------------------ This Space For Rent

Actually, I have experimented many times with using the whole cake, and or just cutting them in 1/2. Back when I wrote the 50/50+ tek, I was slicing them in 1" thick pieces. Most of the pics you see on my site are with whole 1/2 pint cakes, or cut in 1/2. So those are a good 3" or 1 1/2" thick substrates. I will update that in the 50/50+ tek.Really it depends on how many cakes you have to play with, and the size of your casing container. IF you have plenty of substrate cakes to work with then leave them whole. You will get much better flushes with more substrate there. If your limeted on cakes and need to fill a larger container, then you will need to cut them down to 1" slices. -peace- www.thehawkseye.com

I've crumbled and sliced cakes that had whole brown rice in them and it left parts of the kernals exposed. They still fruited but I was very carefull of contams. So if you have whole grains in your cakes use em whole. ------------------ wake up!

Yes Insomnia, just put all your whole cakes in the tray, side by side, crumble a few to fill in the gaps, and case them. You will see the best results this way, in my experience.-peace- www.thehawkseye.com
