Crumbling cakes after 1st flush

Hello. I guess this is a basic question: Is it lawful and good to crumble a cake, cleaned after the first flush, then mix it with manure/vermiculite, case it with manure/verm, and cover for recolonization? Should the cake be dunked overnite before crumbling?

Is it lawful? Yes, of course...Is it a good idea? Well, that's open to subjectivity, but I'll let you in on some info:The cake has to spend a lot of energy changing from the fruiting cycle back to the vegetative cycle. Also, it has less nutrients to do all of this activity. In short, it will take a very long time to recover, and seeing how it probably isn't sterile at this point, contamination is bound to take over. However, if you do it outdoors(if you have the right conditions), you'll have a better chance because of the excellent air exchange and beneficial bacteria in the soil.

I crumbled after the first flush and it took forever to get another pinset. The small pins that were there after harvesting did'nt do a thing.I would say it is best to just wait for another flush. Good luck.

Ive done it and got poor results. Took forever for it to colonize the casing layer and when it finally did few mushrooms that mostly aborted. Maybe it was another factor tho. -baraka

My friend has actually gotten some of his largest and prettiest mushrooms off of casing cakes that have been through a couple flushes. It's true that it takes longer and isn't too reliable, but it definitely yields pretty well. But when you do this, as mentioned before, you are most at risk from contams. This is why this works well as an outdoor type tek, or a pseudo-outdoor tek where you leave them in an exposed terrarium outdoors, where there is plenty of fresh air exchange. Doing it this way seems to be quite contam-resistant. When my friend does this method, he always just kinda throws the casings out on his porch and doesn't mess with em much. But he continues to make new jars. In other words, don't rely on this tek, but treat the shrooms you get as a nice little bonus to your collection.

Sounds like a perfect recipe for disaster, if you ask me. Just leave your cakes as they are and when you do another batch, crumble the cakes as soon as you take them out of the jars. That way there's less of a chance for contamination.
