Crumbling cakes on top of perlite in terrarium...
    #800193 - 08/06/02 01:30 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Hello All,

I have a friend who found out a new way to do things. He--after a couple of flushes from his cakes--takes them and crumbles the cakes on top of the perlite in his terrarium. According to him he's had a huge flush of pins after this was done. Then, after all flushes are done, he just peels the layer of mycelium right off the perlite and tosses it, and the perlite is also still usable...

Anyone ever heard of this???

Sounds risky and messy to me. I would rather case the broken up cakes.

Agreed your friend is just making a casing inside out sorta - with a casing you will have huger yields since the casing layer will hold more moisture = big mushrooms also you have less risk of contamination!

Try a casing and see!

sounds cool... contam risk is higher due to the handling and direct contact with the perlite but other than that... the only problem i forsee is the myco rooting itself into the perlite and "drowning" itself out too much water can be almost as bad as not enough and may start the rotting early

I tried something simliar once, I took a peice of a cake and set it on the perlite. It colonized the perlite, but I never saw it fruit though because I had to take it down because some of the cakes in the terraium got contaminated.
