the myc. will prolly thicken over time but tends to be more rhizo on birdseed than you may be used to.
crumble or slice, makes little diff.

I was thinking wether i should crumble my cakes as i looked at them sliced in half. i decided it would probably just be better to crumble, the cakes seem to compressed and compacted when you just cut them in half.

the best reason i can think of to slice instead of crumble would be time. crumbling sets the myc. back a few days, thus that 'recovery time'.
the theory about increased fruiting area seems a bit moot since it won't be fruiting directly from the crumbled cake anyway but rather from the casing layer once colonized.

no misinformation, just misunderstanding.
i was not saying that they would not fruit if crumbled and left uncased, a your friend did.
what i was saying was that if you did case them, then the shrooms would come forth from the casing, and thus the effective fruiting area would be the same whether sliced or crumbled.

I crumble my casings without allowing any recovery time before actually casing them. I've not had any problems, but I am going to see if delayed casing speeds up fruiting in one of my next batches, just out of curiosity.
