Re: crumbling cakes vs not

Some prefer to cut cakes into slices, others prefer to bury cakes whole in their casing. I prefer to crumble them to get an even layer with no gaps. Although, all methods work and will grow mushrooms. Just make sure you case them well and you should have no problems.

not to hard at all, you get your casing all ready.. lay down the bottom layer, than take your cakes and break em in half, and crumble them into marble size peices between your VERY CLEAN hands.

Just like Vivid said. I like to use a bottom layer of moist vermiculite and a 50/50 peat/verm with a twist of lime (Hawk's 50/50+ casing) on top. It works great, and, yes, clean hands are a must.

birth the cake into a large ziplock baggie and crumble it by squeezing it thru the plastic.
best to wait a week or so after full colonization to ensure that the center of the cake is also colonized before exposing to air.

I heard the bottom layer is unnecessary and only increases risk of contams. True? Can I eliminate the bottom layer in SOS then?

yes, you can.
but i just use perlite for the bottom layer. it almost never contams as long as it's drained well of any excess water.
