just put cakes in terrarium..
    #390280 - 09/10/01 01:56 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys...three cakes are now fully colonized, and just a couple minutes ago I put them in my terrarium. I used a small, clear plastic container from staples as the chamber, put a towel at the bottom with about a half inch layer of perlite and a decent amount of water to soak the perlite and towel. Then just put in some wire mesh a fwe inches above the perlite where the cakes sit on. The terrarium is now outside under a tree where it gets a small amount of sunlight. Any tips or suggestions as to what I currently have would be greatly appreciated. If not wish me luck.

You need some air exchange, and depending on where you live, make sure the temps outside aren't getting too hot or too cold.

I wish you luck.

make sure it's not alot of light....i wouldn't put them out there at all...but then again i never grow outdoors. Since your using cakes, make sure the humid. level stays high. Good Luck!
btw- 4-5 hours of light is all that is needed. Light just tells them whuch way is up....they don't use it to convert to energy.

i would keep them indoors too.. they need very little light to pin and i bet your temps outside are too warm if its sunny. just pust them by a lamp or something inside with temps in the 70's...

Direct sunlight is bad, temperatures can soar and ruin everything. Think of a baby locked in a car with the windows up.

Sorry I dont have an image...I can probably get one out within a day though. Also, it is really indirect sunlight...its in a very (pardon the pun) "shady" area. Cant keep indoors due to my high school status and parents being present...and by gas exchange...do you mean just poke a few holes at the top?

Indirect sunlight should be OK. I drill my holes at the bottom, but I also refresh the air with a blower. You're gonna have to go out there 2 - 3 times a day and introduce fresh air.
