Cakes Turning Blue
    #372512 - 08/15/01 05:50 PM (23 years, 5 months ago)

Hey, I birthed my cakes about 4 days ago. Today I put saran wrap on the cooler they are in and put them in the sun for 1/2 and hour. I then took them back into the house where the temp is around 70 degrees (F). I looked at them this afternoon and the tops of the cakes were blue. Does this mean I should dunk them for like 12 hors in spring water or what? I assume the problems came from being too hot in the sun. The humidity should be fine because there is a perlite layer of 2" and a layer of 1/4" of water. Anybody have any suggestions? Oh yes, they have not pinned yet, they just have fluffly mycelium growth. Thanks!

my ex did the same thing... but left em in direct sunlight a lot longer, figuring "hey, sunlight can't be bad for something growing". w/in a day all the cakes were turning blue. After dunking and double-ended casing (over a week ago), they are just now starting to recover. She leaves em *far* away from the window now.

this is redundant and you can read it on an ass-load of posts, but...

p. cubes aren't like marijuana, they don't benefit from intense sun-light or prolonged sun-light, infact, they barely need light. the light doesn't contribute to more growing, it only points the mushrooms in the right direction.

peace out! I hope the cakes come back full in effect!

You are correct for the most part, but light is needed to initiate the pinning, as well. The light needed to do this is found in the blue spectrum(which is obviously a part of natural sunlight)...4-8 hrs of INdirect light/day is plenty to initiate pinning and help them with upward growth.

I decided that dunking might be a bit drastic because on the tops of two cakes were turning slightly blue. I have put a thin layer of wet vermiculite on the tops of those two cakes, so I hope that will help. If I don't see mycelium growing up into that layer ina few days, I will dunk. I am kind of afraid to dunk. Does anyone want to give me any dunking pointers? Thanks!

Don't dunk!! Most of your pins will be coming from the base up until about the mid-point and you might not see any at all from the top(even on a non-blue cake)..

Btw, blueing isn't necessarily a bad thing...Come back to me after your first flush and tell me how beat up those bad boys look...Trust me, they will produce...

cool, that I did not know.

so, it would improve my flushes if I gave my casings indirect sunlight (as opposed to just a regular light-bulb light)?

thx, peace out!
