Turning the other cheek

Jesus tells us that if someone slaps us on the cheek, we should turn the other cheek. But is this philosophy practical in the real world? I am probably the most forgiving person I know, and I am much more willing to turn the other cheek than most so-called Christians I have met. The result is that I'm seen as weak--a total pushover who gets taken advantage of and gets no respect. Do you think perhaps the "eye for an eye" philosophy might work better?

Depends, always depends. Depends on the people. Depends on the situation.
The question I'm asking is; when can either response get me the things I'm after?

Sometimes. But an eye for and eye leaves us all blind in the end. I read that somewhere.

You don't have to be a revengeful jerk to get respect. I suspect you are missing something regarding why people treat you the way they do.

I was just talking about this with someone today!!!
I was in the situation of having someone with whom I had recently moved in with, a new room mate, so to speak, discuss an argument we had gotten into. She was wrong, in my opinion, and it turns out in her opinion, as well, because she called me to apologize.
However, in the apology, she conveniently got some of her facts wrong, but I didn't correct her. I felt that it was big enough of her to apologize, I didn't need to rub her face in it.
But I asked the person with whom I discussed this issue whether I should have pointed out the discrepancies in the room mate's facts, or should I let it go. When I let things go, people see me as weak, and think they can put things over on me.
I think it has to do with ego. The bigger the ego, the more it matters how others see you.
There is more to this, I think, but I can't remember what it is. Oh, and I'm not speaking from a strictly Christian perspective. But I have a feeling that the perspective from which I'm speaking runs parallel to the Christian perspective.
Someone needs to go do research on why the "eye for an eye" discussion came up in the bible. (Damn, I'm lazy today.)

Could be. I don't remember where I read it.
I don't think you should take revenge, but don't let stuff happen. If you have to defend yourself then that's that.

^ That whole thing, frog, was classic female politics that I want to stay a dozen feet from at all times.
Why do we act the way we do?
Turning the other cheek depends on my mood. Sometimes I'll be happy not to say anything when someone cuts in front of my in a line. Sometimes I'll attempt revenge. Sometimes I'll apologise for having got my foot under someones who was walking by.

Boy, that 'turn the other cheek' phrase always gets misinterpreted. What it really means is to show them your ass cheek (the other cheek) and tell them to kiss it. You'll find after doing this that many people will leave you alone because you don't take shit. Now, there will be a few who may get belligerent with you, that's where a good ass whuppin' comes into play. Normally after you kick somebody's ass they'll give you no more grief.
No need to thank me, I'm here to help.

I didn't know that. Something that works well for me is to drill a hole in their head and throw them in the levy. But keep that on the downlow.

Sorry to go off topic with this conversation, but bullshit! (wink, smile, lol, and all that. Just having fun here.)
That was not female politics! If I was a true female, wouldn't I have rubbed her nose in her mistakes, even after extracting an apology from her????

If you were a true female you would have been polite to her on the phone, but immediately told your friends about how she was a total bitch and you could have said this but you didn't and then she was all like trying to pretend she didn't do it, but you knew, and...

Oh.
Well, then, first problem we have here is I don't have any other female friends but one, and she doesn't even know this other person. Almost every one I know is a guy.

In my experience, that is what women do. They think they have taken a moral high ground, but then they make petty phone calls to their friends about it.

Matthew 5:39 "ButI tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also." nkjv
I was once told that in the time of Jesus hitting someone on the right cheek was very disrespectful. And the reason Jesus says to turn the other cheek to the person is so that you were an equal to that person. You aren't to be looked down on. It doesn't mean let everyone walk all over you.
