Can you immerse yourself in fictional reality?

Before you answer please let me elaborate on what I mean by fictional reality.
Let's say that you were in love with someone you had not seen in a very long time, and you were going a long distance to meet them. When you arrived, you discovered that they were already married to someone else and all your hope was destroyed.
In this situation, would you be able to imagine/daydream a fictional reality in which you lacked this knowledge, and still had the hope and excitement that you experienced on the trip to meet them, so vividly that the thought of it would give you anywhere close to the same level of comfort and joy that you experienced at that past time?
I believe that I had this ability (or was better at it) when I was younger, but now it is very hard for me to push aside knowledge for a temporary time just to satisfy fictional desires and wishful thinking.

Give in to nostalgia and find another one. The other path is pure delusion.

Why would you want to lie to yourself like that? Maybe it feels better maybe for a little while, but that just can't be mentally healthy. I'd rather confront and deal with the truth.
Also, I have to admit your story sounds kinda creepy. You didn't actually drive out to a woman who you hadn't seen or spoken to in years with the hope/delusion that you were going to get with her, and then continue to believe in the relationship even after finding out she was married, did you?

There's no need to confront anything. The truth can be gracefully met with "purifying nostalgia" (Coelho).

No but I am using that as an example.
