I'm NOT ignoring the advice of seasoned growers, I thought I was following orders which is why I posted an update, to show this.

Obviously I was wrong and should apparently just take the top container out, put pearlite in the bottom 4" and that's it? These are really going to fruit at 18 degrees Celsius?

You know what, I think this terrarium is a fucking brilliant idea and you old timers are not going to learn anything new.

The total cost of this is $100AUD and the air pump is set to be on constant, so there goes that conundrum.

The total cost of 2 plastic containers, a water heater, and a water pump would be about $60, so spending and extra $40 to completely control all variables is a good buy. Plus, there's this stigma in this forum where nothing new is tried, all newcomers are silenced and the aggressive attitude by magic mushroom growers, of all people, is fucking horrendous. I'm going to give it a go and thanks for your encouragement.

It's as brilliant as a shit in a sandwich. It's as new as  anything that died out 65 million years ago can be.

You're not the only one who've dreamed up something like that, as a matter of fact everybody who starts with this hobby does similar shit if they're not lucky enough to have stumbled upon good info right from the start.

What I don't get is why there are so many people like you, that when presented with good info decide to dismiss it, normally for reasons like, "I'm so smart and want to revolutionize this hobby" "It's just for science" "I'm very stubborn and are proud of it"... We see this shit very very often here.... These people will never become decent cultivators, ever.

Then, there is the other type of noob. They also like to dream up stuff, but these noobs are smarter and think; "wait a minute, I'm just a rank noob, maybe what I'm planning to do is just crap, why are there no experienced growers doing what I wanna do? If it's so good what I plan to do, why hasn't anyone done it yet? Well, I'm gonna do a little research and maybe I can see why".

It's up to you which kinda noob you want to be, but the first type stinks so much....

I'm the second type of noob, or at least I'm trying to be.

I though I was building a SHFC varient for colder climates.

You say that everyone here has made a similar error, I say, that is fucking bullshit.

Because if that were true, most people here would be nice, as oppose to evil and pointing your finger while laughing.

No, I'm not a seasoned grower, yes, I've read a lot on this forum, obviously I didn't read the bit where newcommers should just shut the fuck up. You want to ban me for trying to grow mushies and making a mistake? Are we living in Nazi Germany? Soviet Russia? What the fuck.

Look, there's a user here that says that the boards are like a mirror, that you get what you give, and I couldn't agree more to that. It's the attitude of a new member that will provoke a good or bad response from other users.

I've seen really slow and dumb new members with really dumb questions but with a willingness to listen and learn. Those will never get a bad response from anyone, well, maybe the occasional troll but that's it.

On another note, don't take shit so personally, it doesn't make sense really, I'm just an anonymous guy on the internet.

No, the OP was smart enough to take advice and go with it 5 years ago.  The thread necromancer might be 14 though.  It only takes a tiny little bit of trying to read and comprehend what you're told and NOT go do something totally different for the hell of it.

Lovely.

The temperature here is between 10 and 18 degrees Celsius.

Someone said that is fine - is this true? If so, I'm happy to buy pearlite and get that SGFC going.

The reason I'm asking is because I've read the the optimum is between 27 and 29, so I assume that my climate is too cool.

This was the primary reason for doing it with a fish tank in the first place. So that the temperature can be controlled. The trouble is that I'm only home during the evening and live in an old, mouldy and cold house. Even with my 2 heater on, the room will quickly cool down once I turn them off because of the way it was designed (with gaps everywhere).

When I had my fish tank going (before I read this thread) I noticed 2 things:

1. There is a turbulence inside the fish tank.

2. The dew forming on the cake looked like a good sign.

Now I've read more about the relationship between FAE, humidity and a terrariums internal air flow, pressure and temperature, I'm able to ask this question:

Should I stick with the $100 fish tank or use a SGFC?

you don't want to control the temperature. natural fluctuations from day to night are beneficial. what you want and what the mushrooms need are two different things until you read up some more

10c is just a little low, you can't put on a heater in the room or something?

Lol, dude you are WAY too focused on the temps

There are far more important things to deal with when it comes to mush cult. Just make sure they're not ice cubes and not melting like butter on a summer days pavement

18 is an okay temp but ten is pretty low. Would probably work but will slow things down a lot. Personally in your situation a incubator might be needed but it won't help in fruiting. The best advice I can give you is start growing when your life situation is better.

Running the risk of hypothermia at night cannot be good for you. Mushrooms seem like they should be low on the totem pole given those circumstances.

Seriously, that's not comfortable at all.. Usually people try and maintain comfortable room temp for themselves first and foremost.. and then since we maintain that perfect 15-21 degrees for ourselves it's perfect for indoor cultivation of cubes. Whoever told you high 20's for growing cubes is sadly mistaken. That is a recipe for disaster.

Cheers, I'm definitely confused about the temps now and about how important it is.

Just here: https://www.shroomery.org/8484/What-are-the-optimum-P-cubensis-growth-parameters

It says, 23-27 degrees, but if you guys say no big deal, then its no big deal!

SHFC it is then!
