Re: Could I use a fishtank for growing mushrooms? [Re: naturesrevolt]
    #23282732 -

Sorry for the rehash, but I bought an aquarium and read this thread afterwards..

So for the moment I'm stuck with it.

I can control the humidity and temperature, as well as the cleanliness of the water, using a water filter supplied with the tank and various chemical additions designed for fish and plants.

However, the fresh air exchange is not controlled. I only fan the terrarium twice a day.

There is a gap around the lid, obviously, which is about a quarter inch wide, as well as an inch wide hole to lift the lid off.

According to this thread, that is clearly not enough.

I should mention that there is turbulence in the air, from the difference in ambient temperature (cooling the glass) and the heated water (27 degrees Celsius). I can see at the top half inch edges, the glass is far less humid, suggesting that the heat from the water is moving upwards, which is forcing cool air from outside the terrarium (it's winter here), through the gaps in the lid, down towards the water, where its heated, and returns to the top.

My question is; is that turbulence enough, and what if I use an underwater plant to supply the terrarium with oxygen?

You need holes to provide FAE, you cant pump air in. Fanning is only to kick start evaporation of water off the substrate, it has nothing to do with air exchange.

You may be stuck with a fish tank, but you dont have to use it. You really should just spend 8$ on a clear plastic tote and build a shotgun terrarium... it really is the best FC fir cakes and small trays. When you move on to bulk you wont need a fruiting chamber anymore anyways.

1/4 " holes in a 2" x 2" grid pattern on all *SIX* sides. 5" damp perlite in the bottom, raised up at the corners.. I use mason jars or soup cans.

You mist about 3-4 times a day or as needed.

Thank you so much for the extraordinarily fast reply!

It's winter here and heating is a problem.

Would it be possible to supply the terrarium with O2 using an underwater plant?

Probably not. Air exhange is about much more than just supplying 02

What is your room temp? Anything in the low to mid sixties is fine.. if its below that you might need a space heater in the room.

Build the SGFC. Everyone else will give you the same advice

 yeah. I mean there's simply no way to give the organism as much fresh air as it'd want in that terrarium, so you're always going to diminish your yields regardless.

Thanks guys,

The ambient temperature is 18 degrees Celsius. I could use a heat pad I guess, looks like I'll be getting fish.

naw you can't use those either. it'll roast your mushrooms in an hour.

aquarium is pretty much a no-go all around.

Your room temp is fine for fruiting, ok for colonizing jars.. Heating pad is a no no.

If you absolutely need to incubate your jars as they colonize, a tub in tub incubator set to 70F is the only real acceptable way to to it.

If I were you, I wouldnt incubate at all. Use a space heater on a timer if you must

18 is ok for fruiting? Damn I wish I knew that before! I read 23-27 degrees!

In any case, you guys are all going to hate me because I'm a stubborn person, I'm half Italian and now I'm babbling.

I just bought an air pump which rates to 160L per hour, my fish tank is 20L and its 1/2 filled with water. So that would be at least 1 full air exchange per hour.

Don't get me wrong, I respect you guys and can see how amazing your results are, but I've already committed to the tank, the poor little guy, so I'm going to give it my best shot.

That being said, as far as I'm aware, the reason for the holes is for FAE, would presumably be primarily for O2, which the cake would consume. Or is it CO2?

I'm also really happy that everyone here is mature enough to not put aggressive memes up, oh wait, look at that, too late.

You read what they had to say and instead of spending money on a plastic tub you went and bought an air pump?   God damn it... every time I think I've seen the most ridiculous thing today, it gets worse..

I'm pretty convinced that this will work. All the variables have been covered.

Either this turns out to be amazing or horrible.

Its too late for me to explain it to you. You will probably get some fruits... cubes are hardy enough ti fruit under just about any conditions. But you won't get anywhere near as good a grow as with a proper SGFC .

You cant pump in air for FAE..  it needs to happen all the time. A major pinning trigger is the constant evaporation of water droplets off the substrate. Thats why you need to holes, it has to happen all the time. You could grow without any fruiting chamber at all but the substrate would dry out unless you wrre around to mist all day.
The SGFC is designed to give the most FAE without letting the substrate dry out too fast, you only need to mist 3-4 times a day.

Ditch the aquarium man!

after all the information given to you, you went out and bought a completley useless item instead of the one thing that would have actually made a huge impact on your grow.

absolute fail. im done. hiding this thread. have fun with this dipshit, guys.

People who are like "teehee I'm stubborn so I don't listen even when I'm terribly wrong" and go on to narrate their stubbornness like it's their main positive character trait make me want to eat a bullet.

You know what, I think this terrarium is a fucking brilliant idea and you old timers are not going to learn anything new.

The total cost of this is $100AUD and the air pump is set to be on constant, so there goes that conundrum.

The total cost of 2 plastic containers, a water heater, and a water pump would be about $60, so spending and extra $40 to completely control all variables is a good buy. Plus, there's this stigma in this forum where nothing new is tried, all newcomers are silenced and the aggressive attitude by magic mushroom growers, of all people, is fucking horrendous. I'm going to give it a go and thanks for your encouragement.
