What happened to Ted talks? Straight trash now.

Jump onto their youtube channel to scope out the newest ted talks only to find trash like some women pushing her rape culture drivel while pushing her bullshit 1 in 5 women in college gets raped stats. Then I see what is basically a paid ad for the uber service designed to turn people against having the government regulate their services. Then I see scandalous all fucking gore talking about climate change.

What happened to science?

I stopped watching them after one of their speakers attempted to "revolutionize" the construction industry by designing the materials to be self assembling in the same manner DNA is. Just, no. TED has this air of arrogance around it that lets ideas like that actually make it to the podium. The entire idea is garbage, most of their talks are garbage. Its a tabloid for self proclaimed "intellectuals"

I was never too impressed with TED talks in the first place :shrug:

it always struck me as low-caliber bite-sized pop science at best. You really can't go very deep into any subject with a 30 minute talk so you don't really learn much watching them, it's more like brain candy than brain food.

The talks I specifically liked weren't even science related. Some were just motivational speaker style talks.

I have a problem when a speaker pushes bullshit science as truth.

You have to weed through a good amount of bad ones but I just saw one about a new way of screening for breast cancer yesterday that was very good. My mom had breast cancer and luckily they caught it, but women with dense breast tissue have much less chance of having it be detected by mammography. Like, only 30% chance. That's abysmal. This new technique using gamma rays instead of x-rays can detect smaller tumors much more often(and somehow only gives the same dose of radiation as an x-ray,) and unlike a mammogram the procedure is not uncomfortable at all.

I unsubscribed from TED a year or two ago because there were so many bad ones, but every couple of months I peruse all of their new videos and just watch the ones I want to. I like doing it this way more than always having new crappy talks clogging up my inbox. Every once in a while there's still one that's gold.

Here's another good one I watched yesterday. It's by the guy who writes the blog WaitButWhy. If you've never heard of it you should check it out, or at least watch the talk.

Are you watching TED talks or TEDx talks.

TEDx talks are not affiliated with TED talks and pretty much anyone can do them.

I've definitely seen some good Ted Talks.

I haven't watched any of the recent ones though.

But one night a couple years ago, I fell asleep watching one of the talks, and I woke up to my computer frozen and finding out my hard-drive failed that night lol.

I've watched both but both of the ones I just talked about were TED not TEDx.

i was watching them on my ps3 the other night and thought they were about the same in quality (it had been awhile). then again i don't require all of my information sources to only convey views i agree with.

TED talks imo aren't for well informed people. The best educated individuals in my life all hate ted talks.

some of em are ok, but the amount of nonsense and sensationalism in them is silly

I prefer Films for Action or Intelligence Squared debates (can be found on YouTube). I rarely watch TED anymore

npr here plays audio from the science ones on sunday afternoons with some other good stuff. no complaints. i guess they pick the good ones (or i'm just not paying attention because i'm listening in my car).
