Internal Parasites from fresh mushrooms in Victoria, Australia?
    #22529953 -

Earlier this year, I picked and ate fresh Psilocybe subaeruginosa mushrooms for the first time. Then 3 weeks later I started feeling lots of brain-fog, which has led to other symptoms like fatigue and just a general feeling of unwellness. On occasion I have symptoms like mild rashes on my skin which seem like bites, occasional diarrhea, bloating, and all other kinds of things.

At this point I'm quite certain I have a parasitic infection, although the stool tests I've done so far haven't found any. Has anybody developed a parasitic infection from eating fresh mushrooms they found in the wild, or do you know of any parasites that commonly inhabit Psilocybe subaeruginosa mushrooms? Any information would be well appreciated.

When you were tested for parasites, did they test your white cell count?

It can be tricky finding parasites when you don't know what to look for, but evidence of an internal infection generally can be much easier.

It's possible you have a parasite and it's even possible you got it from eating mushrooms but that would not be particularly likely.

If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Good question! All your concerns have been brought up before. Some have found crazy stuff growing in hollow stems before too. So it's been 11 months now?

My white cell count was in the normal range, and it's been 5 months now that I've been feeling fatigued.

Has there been any major changes in your life before or right after ingesting subaer? Just asking.

A slight change in my values and perspective, I think. (edit: after using psilocybin) The few weeks after using the mushrooms, I had no difficulties going about my daily life. But around three weeks after I just started feeling this lingering brain fog, along with feelings of derealisation, anxiety, etc. Like if I'd go for a walk or do exercise, I'd start to feel really tired and like I should head back. Had a few panic attacks too in noisy/crowded places. The only other time I've really had panic attacks was with earlier cannabis use, and my first experience with psilocybin.

At first I thought it was all psychological but later I started getting more physical symptoms.

Fresh can be sketchy for sure. Drop in hot tea or drying kills bad things. Watch my time lapse video. All kinds of things crawl on them while growing.

It's crazy how much movement there is. Looking back at the pictures I posted of the group I picked from, there are all kinds of things on them which are probably easy to miss without a camera. I think this one's a good example: http://s13.postimg.org/7kugm34bp/mushroom_5.jpg

A bit of a shame I wasn't more careful back then, heh.

Dammit freshies are my favourite. I always do a fairly rigorous looking over (for obvious reasons) and remove all visible creepys. Although I do leave the maggots because I figure its good protein and
I ain't gonna let the little buggers having any of my psi.
I am keen to know whether the cause was the shrooms and whether others have had similar experiences.
I hope for your sake you sort out your symptoms and resolve the problem.

Dropped in hot tea is still nice for fresh. Texture might change but oh well. :pipesmoke:

You can give freshies a quick soak in salt water to help get rid of any funky critters.

I have never heard of anyone getting parasites from mushrooms, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility given they grow in the wild and some bug could crawl through shit then on your shrooms and track some funk on them.

Freshies are so much fun though.

I know some people who have preexisting mental disorders, have these disorders come out after having a psychedelic experience, this might be something to look into.  How's the mental health in your family, anyone with an mental health issues?

correlation is not causation, not to say its not a possibility but since nobody else reports getting parasites from wild mushrooms, i'd say the odds are pretty slim.  sorry to hear about your problem though, that sounds like something you are actively investigating within the mdedical system however.

been checked for something like Lyme disease?  Does it exist in your area or something like it?  the odds you got something while out looking from a mosquito or tick are probably greater than something being able to survive the pH of your stomach (my opinion.)

This is a possibility OP. Have you removed any ticks from yourself in the last year? Do you have any tick bites that have left a dark, noticeable scar? Your symptoms sound similar to Lyme disease, and Lyme is very difficult to diagnose. Most doctors will miss it entirely, typically a doctor must be considered "Lyme-literate" for a successful diagnosis. I hear that the testing is extensive and pricey, and many insurance companies will not cover the tests.

Also, here's an old thread where the TCs 'friend' contracted at least three parasites from consuming fresh Panaeolus mushrooms found growing on dung: Eating Wild Mushrooms and Internal Parasites. These are microscopic parasites that can be missed in stool samples and other tests.

Contracting a parasite from a mushroom is less common than contracting a bacterial infection i.e. food poisoning. Both, however, have been known to happen. Food poisoning is actually very common with fresh mushrooms, and is one of the main reasons that people typically prep psilocybes and edibles before eating them. Especially if they are found growing on dung, like cubes and blue meanies. All of the parasites and bacteria that the cow carries will transfer into the dung, and onto the wet flesh of the mushrooms when they begin to fruit.

A lot of this can be avoided by making your fresh shrooms into a tincture, with around a 70/30 mix of grain alcohol to water. Let it soak for 24 hours (either in a brown glass bottle or in a dark place), filter and discard the pulp, and consume the liquid.

Or drop in honey for a week. Both work so very well.

Yes it's very possibly unfortunately. As someone else said, Lyme disease is a possibility also, however the fact you know the symptoms started 3 weeks after might help a doctor tell you which parasite you have (if any).

Personally I always dry my mushrooms but I don't know how effective this is at killing parasites.

Sounds like you have bees in your brain man...

Probably just lyme disease. If you hunt a lot, it's really easy to contract.
