Guilt is in fact a very productive and necessary mechanism for change. It's biologically essential for our survival and evolution.
Nice flat statement with no backing. Please show how it is a mechanism for change.

By using my fear and guilt, which are so detested by Swami,
It is not so much the fear that is detested, but the unawareness or denial that fear is the motivating factor behind ALL lies.

Life and Death

The example discussed by shizpow and fireworks_god, and how about this one?

Your friend is on the ledge of a 50-story building and is threatening to jump because his life is schitt. You convince him that he shouldn't jump because he has a wonderful life, when reality is, his life is schitt.

I think I read somewhere on this forum that suicide is bad for your karma.

Anyways, maybe you can help him make his life better? At least, you can possibly get him thrown into a mental hospital.

Doesn't that open a whole new can of worms? If you save someone's life, aren't you somehow now responsible for it?

You might try the truth about people who have turned their lives around; about talents that the person has; the fact that he has a friend trying to reach out to him...

Anyways, I just don't think that this would be a good time to use complete honesty, unless you're you, Swami.  I imagine that you would be good pseudo-psychologist-type to talk someone down off a ledge without lying to them, but most people probably don't have those skills.  But I see your point, about how to say "your life is schitt" without using those words.  Still, I think it's a close call.
