Top 10 Biblical Misconceptions
    #13778610 -

(according to this guy)

10

Quote:
"Contrary to popular belief, Adam and Eve were expelled from Eden not because they ate the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, but in order to prevent them from eating from the tree of life (both forbidden trees are in Genesis 2:9) which would have made them eternal. God doesn’t like competition! Here is the verse (Genesis 3:22-23): “And he said: Behold Adam is become as one of us, knowing good and evil: now, therefore, lest perhaps he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever. [23] And the Lord God sent him out of the paradise of pleasure, to till the earth from which he was taken.”

The difference of 'punishment' and 'prevention' in one of the initial scenarios of human existence (Biblical) is an important one. You could feel we've been exiled from paradise or that we've been protected from doing something we're not ready for (yet?), at least in the eyes of the God of Genesis.

Well that interpretation does avoid a 'punishing' god but it also leads us to think that god is fearful of human potential. Do you think this is accurate?

That's interesting. He/She is a jealous god afterall. One misconception I've noted, is the Bible stopped. I feel the story is on going. Maybe not recorded like it was, but ongoing still.

This still makes very little sense and causes as many questions.

The most obvious to me is:

Why make the tree/s at all, and place them in the garden, if we were forbidden/unprepared to eat from them?

A test maybe? If we are talking of a supreme being, it could be about any reason we are unable to imagine.

To back up God.

Think of taking all this time to make a birthday cake for someone and the person took a piece of it before the set day.

You don't know for sure that God's intention was to not ever let adam eat of both the trees. Think of it like a child taking shrooms, they just aren't mature enough to use them yet.

Also, the fruits of these trees may not be like an orange or apple, they could possibly be a powerful hallucinogen or "drug" that without certain maturity and reasoning could cause bad results.

I would think God would want to create beings that he could not foresee every decision they would make

I was awaiting the "test" response.

If we were unprepared to eat the fruit, why pose that test? It seems rather arbitrary and cruel.

I don't ask my kid: Hey do you want candy for breakfast? and then when they answer yes, say: what the fuck, you can't have it, it is bad for you!

It also could be a description of our states of minds throughout evolution. How we became conscious.
To know 'good and bad' it needs some kind of consciousness that maybe animals don't have.
It's said, before that 'sin-fall', g*d, humans, animals and plants all lived together in peace in the 'garden of eden'. Think here a human as kind of animal, with evolutionary potential, what differentiates him from animals, in the sense of 'becoming (more) conscious'.
The sin-fall could describe some evolutionary event, where our race snapped onto the way of (more) 'consciousness'.
Maybe it has to do with nutrition, tools, art, communication or something else we couldn't find out yet; I am not sure where this snap happened.

Also interesting, I find, is that in the apocrypha the garden of eden is somehow described as something higher in 'altitude', so adam and eve had to climb down from it, like a mountain, after they were moved out from it.

Could make sense hehe, whatever I like to look onto those strange parallels in evolution, mind and the g*d concept :crazy2:

Anyone here read The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind? It suggests that "the human brain once assumed a state known as a bicameral mind in which cognitive functions are divided between one part of the brain which appears to be "speaking", and a second part which listens and obeys." Furthermore, that people understood the "speaking" part to be an outside voice (God), much like schizophrenics hear voices.
