I'm going to have to side with Swami on this one. I love it when he posts like he has here.

Swami said:

Yep. Hiding in any degree only strengthens the illusion of seperateness from one another. The more you hide, the more energy you exerte to a useless cause. You aren't as free to live your life.

I also agree with Pattern here, though. The only times I really ever lie is when it is in relation to illegal substances. The first rule rule is survival, we need to survive before we can coexist peacefull. The only thing we can do is fight to change the laws, so we can live without having to lie, and we will have more of a chance of doing that if we are not in jail.

Let me put it this way, then...

Let's assume I am married to a wonderful man.  We have a wonderful marriage.  His job takes him on a weekend seminar.  He has never cheated on me, but on this seminar, he succumbs, for whatever reason, to another woman.

He doesn't tell me about it, but for the rest of our lives together, he never tells me about it.

I get to live the rest of our lives in marital bliss, because I don't ever find out about the indiscretion.

An alternative:  My spouse tells me about the indiscretion.  Even though he never would have gone out on me again, we spend the rest of our lives with me in anxiety because I feel bad that he had an affair, and he "might" do it again.

Which is better?

The alternative. The first one invovles ignorance. I can't stand ignornace. Do you get to live in bliss because of ignorance? Yes, but it is also possible to live with bliss while being aware of everything.

The fact is, he had an affair, and whether you choose to acknowledge it or not, or would prefer to never find out, that is still reality.

And, in the alternative, if the love really was mutually true, I believe it is entirely possible that the wounds will heal.

I don't see why ANYONE would EVER want to live in a state of ignorance, of not wanting to know the truth and be connected to reality. Is it nice and safe, comfortable and blissful to be ignorant? I guess, but you give up your freedom. Myself, I consider freedom and the pursuit of awareness the gift of life itself.
Peace.

Good post fireworks!

I was going to say something similar.

Although I admit to lying sometimes just to get out of uncomfortable situations. I would like to be truthful all the time, but that is extremely hard to do. Especially when you live around judgemental people whom you love.

I will also admit it. I used to lie a hell of a lot to get out of things. I blame it on my creative imagination. Once in sixth grade, we had this big assignment like based on one country, you know, the one where you are suspossed to be working on it for weeks. I procrastinated, and when the teacher asked me why I had nothing, I told him that my dad had came over to the house during the weekend and cleaned everything out, and that it was thrown away... (my parents were divorced and everything). I was probably close to tears, which made it more convincing, but that was only because I was so scared of him not buying it.

I have gradually been working on the problem, and I can't really say that I lie very often anymore, its just too easy, and it doesn't exactly promote self growth. hehe. It still happens, though..... or does it? I could just be lying, you know.
Peace.

Shifting blame to others for your actions/words is merely abdicating responsibility.

The idea of protecting another's feelings is masquerading under the pretense that:

In my case, if it was to be a one-time event, I would want to remain in ignorance. In fact, when I was married, I used to tell my ex that if he had an affair, and it was a one-time deal, please don't tell me. I'm pretty sure he never had an affair, but at least if he did, I'm not all fucked up over it, since I don't know about it anyways.

No, i've never wondered what that meant...it's pretty clear. Now we get into the niches tho....what do they mean by WHOLE truth? How much of the truth do they know?
Most people will build a framework of understanding, or "truth" and go with it, with ample opportunity for events to pass their understanding.
They would rather believe what they think now than confront new evidence/truth and upset their working balance. Not telling them something that would otherwise never cross their lives isn't lying, it's just not telling them. They'll never know the difference. They don't even really need to know, seeing as the truth they have is a functional one.
Limiting information aquisition is a trickier one tho....primarily because the fact that in order to do that you have to manipulate events/perceptions in such a fashion as to make the source either unavailable or unplatable. The potential for outright falsehood is much greater here, but the theory is the same. Just make them think, based on their current view of truth, that the source is worthless. Or, if necessary, require the source be unavailable (see frogs post) for a period of time. no lies, just manipulation.
Manipulation, however, can be more damaging than a lie to any relationship, especially when handled inexpertly.

Never, in either case, is a lie actually told. Everything you say is true, and no one may know what else there is to say, and careful word choice and sentence structure accompanied with a good delivery and controlled body language will keep them safe and secure in their mistake.

Re: Liar, Liar [Re: Swami]

Are we talking about different truths? What truths must always absolutely be told?

I usually always tell the truth. (I say "usually" because last time I said I never lie, someone blasted me and said everyone lies, and I did lie to my girlfriend a few months ago, so I guess I can't say that.)

There are times when I tell a truth and then I have to take shit over it.

I think it's better to just not say anything, but I tend to say whatever I think, and that gets me in trouble, too.

People do not react well to the truth. I don't think all people can handle the truth very well.

What about just not saying anything? Does "omission" count as a lie? I have this little problem of forgetting to do things. Sometimes that happens in my work. I always fix it, but does my client have to know that I almost screwed their case up?

There must be some things that it's okay to lie about. Still, I will find a way to say something that may hurt someone or offend them, without lying.

Two times is too much.  Once is bad enough, but at least it's only once.  He should live with the pain of what he did and not inflict it on me.  But two times, I guess I'd have to know about it.  I've heard that finding out about a spouse's affair is really painful.  I'm glad I've not had to experience that.

Well, you can't plan on cheating!

It has to be sort of by accident.  Something not planned out.

First of all, I like what you say about honesty. You are right.

But, I do not think that I am lying when I say I would like to be honest all the time, even though I am not. When I do tell an untruth (no matter how small) it makes me feel bad. I do not like feeling bad.

Also, I don't usually lie to make people "feel better". I never said that was my reasoning. I usually lie to escape consequences or to avoid immediate unpleasentness. Although lying makes me feel bad, telling the truth can be even more unpleasent when you are dealing with someone who may react harshly.

When I say that I would like to be truthful all the time, what I mean is, I would like to be impervious to others reactions and be more confident in what I believe is right and wrong. But when it comes to what I feel is important and right, Almost NOONE I know feels the same way. So, I find myself being untruthful about certain things when I am around these people. I am mainly talking about family. I will not remain friends with someone who judges.

I am honest about the reasons for my untruthfulness. I never said that I was noble or superior.

But, I do not think that I am lying when I say I would like to be honest all the time, even though I am not.
Who is the one who wants to be honest?
Who is the one who carries out the action?

Do you see how you radically diminish your personal power by splitting yourself?

When I do tell an untruth (no matter how small) it makes me feel bad. I do not like feeling bad.
Contrary to popular opinion, guilt is not the product of moral consciousness, but is a trick to stay stuck in self-defeating behaviors. Does guilt work as a mechanism for change? Never! Only awareness works.

Although lying makes me feel bad, telling the truth can be even more unpleasant when you are dealing with someone who may react harshly.
Someone only reacts harshly as a method of control. Don't let them. Be courageous!

Please don't take this as arrogance or superiority or bragging. It is about a lesson finally learned as I was not this way until later in life. Why do you think I am quite popular here? I say what I believe without fear. Even those that are in disagreement or find me brusque generally respect me BECAUSE I AM AUTHENTIC. I do not hide or pretend. People know where I stand.

I agree that guilt can cause one to stay stuck, but guilt can also motivate one to change. If I do something that makes me feel guilty, I will not do it again because I don't like feeling guilty. I like going to bed with a clean conscience.

See, here's the thing. If you never wanted to know about the first time he had an affair, when you find out about this other affair, you never would know if it was his first or not, so how would you be able to tell?

The thing about entering relationships like that, the thing about getting married is that you are now One. It is suspossed to be about sharing two people's lives as ONE. How could you seriously not mind if someone that you love so deeply and that is suspossed to be your other half slept with someone else, and prefer that they didn't tell you about it?

God, I'd think it would hurt more to never know if they had or not. I don't know, I guess I am just the type that likes to have a firm grasp on reality and not be tricked by illusions...
Peace.

When I lie, I do feel like I am being manipulated. I never feel like I am the one manipulating.
