I've done datura 4 times. And will not do it again, for a long long while - if ever.

It is the ONLY substance i've had a bad trip on.

It was freezing cold, at night, on a deserted beach.
I remember feeling I was in the desert in the blazing heat of the sun. It was light all around me. I was stumbling around in my underwear. I couldn't see my friends - I had no idea I has even been with anyone at all. My memory was swiped, and I was an entirely new person. I headed towards the water because to me, it was like an oasis. One of my sober friends ran after me, and grabbed me to keep me from wading into the rough west coast sea. I thought he was a vulture, his claws digging into me - and I felt like my torso and legs were gushing with blood. I was stricken with fear. Absolutely stricken.

On a brighter note, I also had a glorious trip - where I was looking at the world. There was complete darkness around me, and I could see the entire globe, spinning before me - as if I was viewing it from space. I saw giant rainbows, and doves, circling the world. Gorgeous technicolour patterns flowed from certain points of the darkness. I can't explain how incredible it was... It felt like another dimension.

Datura is not a drug. It transports you to an entirely different place. It is far above me, and far bigger than me. Datura demands respect. She's a beautiful, but unforgiving entity - and she will fuck you up if you fuck with her.

Datura is an exceptional entheogen, and one with a power that is rivaled by few others.  In high doses, Datura can be toxic.  In low doses, it can be a valuable tool that allows you to explore your subconscious and see the cracks between what we consider as reality.

This report describes the effects of four Datura inoxia leaves smoked by one couple:

The skin acquired an unimagined sensitivity. A simple, light caress became a tender, fulfilling experience. The blood collected in our lower abdomens so quickly that it demanded we join. The normal sexual functions were extremely heightened. Every form of erotic exchange and sexual activity had a special deliciousness. The time to orgasm was much longer, and the orgasm itself appeared to last for minutes. During the phase of sexual activity, we were both pleasantly free of thoughts, uninhibited, and very much focused on the moment. The effects lasted the entire night, so that there were many couplings. The next morning, after a short sleep with erotic dreams (!), we awoke with a clear consciousness, a very pleasurable warm sensation in the body, a still overly senstive skin, and a dry throat.

Rätsch, Christian, and Heinz Jürgen Probst. 1985. Xtohk’uh: Zur Ethnobotanik der Datura-Arten bei den Maya in Yucatan. Ethnologia Americana 21 (2), Nr. 109:1137–40.

“In magical beliefs, the thorn apple is used as an agent for producing ecstasy. For example, the priests of the sun temple in the Peruvian city of Sagomozzo would chew the seeds of this plant in order to achieve the inspiration that was the prerequisite for divination. Thorn apple extracts play an enormous role both in witches’ ointments and in narcotic magical incenses. It is generally known that the so-called asthma cigarettes have stramonium as an additive even today. Various people have told us that those in the know smoke these asthma cigarettes because they allegedly stimulate the sex drive.”

Hirschfeld, Magnus and Richard Linsert. 1930. Liebesmittel [love agents]. Berlin: Man Verlag. p. 175

Misinformation, misunderstanding, ignorance around datura

The drug is free, it is legal, it is many times more brilliant than LSD, it is transcendent.

Contrast:

Well I ended up in a mental hospital. I remember them taking me into a general hospital and strapping me down. There was a horribly toxic, heavy body high that gave my entire body restless leg syndrome. My throat was drier than paper, and no matter how much I drank, it would stay so dry. I couldn't urinate at all, either. I have a few scattered memories of nothing making sense and having about a 2 second long span of memory. I could hardly walk, and certainly couldn't see for shit. First my vision started changing tinted colors, but every color was very ugly. Dull brown, baby barf green, rust-color, just the worst colors you can think of. Then, everything kind of turned into little spheres, as if each sphere was a pixel of color. It felt like my eyes were that of a fly's or something. I spent hours in the hospital bed and started freaking out because I had no idea what was going on, and my memory goes blank here. Then I remember them throwing me into a dark room with another person in it, who was sleeping. I spent the entire night thrashing around in my bed and staring at things for, well, who knows how long? It was a horrifying experience. I remember watching these giant people made of cement tromping around the room and trying to step on me, I remember the entire room turning into blue lines somehow, and there were some kind of giant scorpion-like bugs crawling around. At times, I couldn't tell if my eyes were closed or open. I threw up all over the floor. It was like being deleriously ill, but somehow hundreds of times worse because the world is like some shit straight out of akira.

a dude i know got sent to the emergency room during a datura trip in high school. as the legend goes he literally "died" for a few seconds before being brought back to life by the doctors.
not sure if that's totally true, but he definitely got sent to the ER during it. perfect example of irresponsible teenager just wanting to trip out, not knowing what the hell he was getting into.

yeah. i have no real experience with delirients, except that i did take Benzatropine (a more potent version of atropine) for antipsycotic side effects for about 10 months and it gave me some pretty wacky and realistic dreams at first.

i never took more than 1mg so i never tried tripping on it but i could just tell after taking it that it was a super strong drug that isnt meant to be trifled with

i cant imagine that any of these plants or compounds are recreational in any way

I've used datura as a sleep aid, microdosing.
Too much and you get incurable, painful cottonmouth.

Like some Biblic, mythic punishment.
A cotton mouth that no amount of water can touch.

I used to microdose it back when I was in highschool. Never went far enough to have any really profound experiences. Kinda glad I didn't. Smoking moderate amounts isn't so bad.

Just an interesting head space and slight visual distortions. And a really dry mouth.

I found low doses gave me significant loss of short-term memory. This is just going by one experience though.

Gosh! For someone who's been through a lot of shit on datura I'm still excited by it.

One time I was on it I saw my gf wearing a dress I hadn't seen her in before walking across a bridge. Two days later we met up and she was wearing it.

Ayen was her name. Her full name was very similar sounding to ine-atrop. Or atropine. I think her father was playing galactic crambo when he named her

My worst fear while tripping is i aleays wonder "why am i so fucked up? Did i take datura and forget?" Then i wonder if nothing around me is real, lile what if your whole life has been one big daturatic delirious delusion? It really freaks me out to think that theres a button in your brain that can even turn on datura mode.

Fuck that shit. Datura, not even once.

I don't understand the discrimination. It's more dangerous and less fun than most drugs, but that doesn't mean it isn't an interesting or valuable experience.

I've tried it a few times in incremental doses of 15, 20, 30, 40 seeds. Around 30 seeds is when I began noticing mild delirium and odd effects. I was getting slightly blurred vision at that dose too and the worst side effect is the throat dryness and constriction, but it was still manageable at that dosage with just having water. I think 50+ seeds would start to be a more serious commitment to the experience and you'd have to accept some moderate discomfort.

The effects were pretty mild for me, but when you least expect it things may shift a bit or appear different. The strongest hallucinations I had were typewritten words appearing in textures. I spent like 5 minutes trying to decypher a message in the scum of the toilet bowl - from my angle it looked like a strip of paper from a fortune cookie that had fallen in stuck to the bottom of the bowl so the text was backwards and upside down. More text was appearing in the cracks between tiles and the fabric of furniture. Mostly short phrases or chains of words. Mostly nonsense. But they were very real, I would blink a dozen times and focus through the blurring to make out each word. Sometimes they'd change or disappear before my eyes.

Also in the darkness when laying down I saw a notebook appear next to me. I'd lift my head in surprise to get a closer look, but it would disappear. This game of peek-a-boo repeated about 10 times before I prepared my phone's light and sprung up to try and catch a clear glimpse of it before disappearing again. After seeing it vanish in the light I just accepted that I was seeing the wrinkles in the blanket and went sleep.

The effects that I thought were coolest though were in my dreams. I was much more lucid in them than I have ever been before. In one of the dreams that I became lucid I appeared to be reading a forum such as this one. I was scrolling down the page and there were many unique names and avatars, sharing different ideas of different lengths. I suddenly inspected these posts closer and realized they were total gibberish! Like... "Imagine cry coronary down incense run dangle brush? Grape he curry very a hop it have then." It was pretty crazy seeing that, but also very impressive how little sense it made while still appearing like a regular English format.

Another dream I had was in my childhood house and I was evading a group of people that were chasing me through it. I was scrambling around and felt this  impending moment that I needed to survive. I ducked behind a low wall and checked a watch on my wrist that was counting down 03.. 02.. 01.. right at the last moment a ninja pops out from behind the corner and swings his sword as the time hits 00 and my real phone's alarm goes off. I sit up and flick my eyes open, the first beep perfectly synchronized with the timer. It was the most conscious and sharp transition from a dream reality to waking reality I've ever experienced. I thought the contrast was really cool and thanked the datura for thinning that border.

In all I would rate my datura experiences as good, but I feel I only scratched the surface. I've read about more crazy things happening and would like to explore it further but the side effects really were starting to become a negative distraction. I plan to dose higher once I acquire experience with other plants or substances that can soothe the throat and counter those negative effects. I find the delirium to be very interesting though in a controlled setting and I think you can explore your mind and learn about yourself through that experience.
