Its impossible not to get attached to things like this, imo. Theyre our best friends, our trusty tool. I dont even feel this way about my wallet. I probably only feel this connected to my lighter(no matter how cheap it is, i tend to keep the same bic for atleast 6 months) and my knives. For some reason they just become a part of you.

@gresh
I wish i could say i took care of this knife. When i bought it from the roadside antique shop, it was in prime contition. 100% perfect. Since it was placed in my care, ive noticed some pitting. Ive kept it out of its sheath and have been coating it in mineral oil, as ive read carbon steel should, but the corrosion is getting exponentially worse. These stains dont wash off. Im getting incredibly agitated that i cant properly care for this fine knife. As for the handle, its definitely phaux. Its a plastic of some sort, however the rest of the knife is constructed so sturdily and heavily that this doesnt cheapen it. In my opinion, atleast.

that looks like some pretty mild pitting, most of the blade and the whole cutting edge as far as i can tell look totally intact. it just gives the knife a little character lol

mineral oil is kind of the bare minimum when it comes to carbon steel, mineral oil is very thin and easy to accidentally wipe away after you apply it. but the nice thing about mineral oil is that its food grade, so some people still prefer it.

if your not gonna use it for food/animal prep, i would use a heavier oil like Lansky knife oil.

BUT, if you arent gonna use the knife at all and just keep it for display, i would clean the blade as much as possible, getting all the debris out, and finish by wiping with a microfiber cloth, and then buff on some Meguiars cleaning wax(car wax) to seal the knife. lots of people use car wax on their decorative swords or knives because it gives it a great sheen(the wax is like superfine sandpaper) and seals the metal far better than mineral oil

Yea, i wont be using this knife anytime soon. The last time i used it was a few months back when i had some smoked pork and didnt have another knife.

Is there any way to conceal/reverse this pitting? It seems to me that theres not really anyrhing to do about it, though there are many things that i dont know.

If it were up to you, knoeing that this knife is carbon steel, and that it was meant to be competely decorative, what steps , regardless of expense, would you follow precisely to ensure that it maintains its condition?

There's a 'post your blade' thread in the great outdoors forum.  I'm not too sure how active it stays but it's long enough to keep you busy for awhile.

nah, once a knife starts rusting, theres no way to reverse that without adding further damage. at least not a regular person. someone who professionally maintains cutlery artifacts for museums might be able to. but trying to restore a knife is pretty much a waste of time, its easier to add further damage than it is to clean up

as far as keeping the knife from getting any worse, this is what i would do, personally.

first off, remove the knife from the sheath, and never, ever put it back in. just display it with the sheath next to it, not inside. they hold alot of moisture, and rub the wax/oil off

then i would need

iso alcohol
a piece of microfiber cloth
3 regular dish rags
a can of Renaissance wax(better than car wax, it is used in museums)
a case to display it

1) make a mixture of like 95% water, 5% iso. being exact doesnt matter. but you only need a tiny bit of iso for a solvent

2)lightly wet a clean rag with some of the water/iso mix and clean the knife off really well for like 30 seconds.

3) dry the knife off with a different clean rag for a good long time. take a solid 5 minutes drying the blade off theroughly. then take your third dry rag, and dry it for 5 more minutes. and really focus on drying out and rubbing those pitted areas, the water kind of hides in the cracks

4) take a piece of microfiber cloth (the kind for cleaning eyeglasses) and wipe it down really well

5)put some wax on the microfiber cloth and buff the knife with the wax. heres a good video i found with a quick search:

ive never used renessanse wax personally, cause theres always car wax in the garage and it works for me, but apparently its the best. the video explains it fine

then, i would display it in a badass case.

I wear a hide away knife (neck knife) with a double edge.  Its cool, but

I REALLY REALLY WANT THIS ONE SO BAD.

It's a nice knife. Holds an edge good (AUS 8 blade). The action on the assisted opening is awesome it snaps open with authority.  It's lightweight, I believe the handles are G-10 material. I would recommended this knife without hesitation.

I have a Leatherman, nothing too crazy but it's extremely useful.  The only problem I have with it is the bulkiness at times.  I used to carry a SOG Trident but it's practically a hog sticker so it just felt like overkill and a hassle by police waiting to happen so I leave it in my truck.

I stopped carrying knives the day I received my conceal carry permit. I have my beat up ka-bar I use for hunting & fishing. I just ordered a northern 8" stone last night so I can get a nice edge back for this fishing season.

This is my recent buy, actually the only blade i have other than my cooking knives.'
I love this so far, gotta put it to use though. I'm still learning how to sharpen, I did a little but not confident in my sharpening skills with a diamond sharpening stone.

I got an Italian made stiletto (switchblade) but I don't carry it. I don't need to where I'm from. It's pretty dope and I've had it for a while got it from Italy. It's not some cheap knock off either. I see those all over.

Yeah it's real nice. He might of had the counterfeit ones. I've seen them all over, even in smoke shops. this has a handmade handle from some crazy wood and cost me like 160$
