i have quite a few knifes, one has a ploiece logo on it and says to protect and serve.... its an easy out, and has a clip for my pocket. i can have it out in a second, i have a bigger tactical knife that looks about the same, clip and a bigger non serrated blade.
i dont walk around without them, but have never had to use them

straight blade no seration. Serated knives are only needed if the knife is dull.
Mine is never dull. A dangerus knife is a dull one.

There is a cool nub on the back of the blade that acts as a lever that you can use to open the blade with a quick flick of the pointer fingure.

in most places, any knife that is going to be marginally useful for self-defense is illegal to carry.

bear in mind that in the perception of the general public, a knife is a thug's weapon. if you should ever have to use one in self-defense (and it actually works) you would probably have a difficult legal battle ahead.

and who exactly are you going to use a knife against in self-defense?

an unarmed person? good way to get 5 to 10.

a person with a knife? great, get in a knife fight to save your life. you're going to get cut. there's an old saying that the winner of a knife fight is the one that dies second. think about that one.

a person with a bludgeon? even worse than a person with a knife.

a person with a gun? forget about it.

if you want to carry a weapon for self-defense, pick up a reliable handgun and get good at shooting it. then get a CCW permit.

this is the knife i carry:

in self defence a knife is best held point down in your hand blade out and back of blade resting along side of ur arm. So with hands up covering face you cand fend of further punches by wounding the atackers hands. You can also punch with this method. And with any miss hits or grazing punches you have a chance of slicing the asailent.

cut wood with non serated knives   ive been in a fix on hikes where serated knives helped a bunch, but in general i agree with you.  but lots of hard things are better with serated.  or a saw if your so blessed with a brain.

of course you can kill a person with a butterfly knife, but a nice fixed blade would be allot more stable of a weapon as far as your grip, and reliability and such.

and about the 6 inches thing, sorry i must be wrong, i just heard a guy say that one time, its my fault for not checking into the validity of that, lets drop it.

depends on how big of a branch you are cutting. If cutting wood I would use a hatchet which has a straight blade. If I was wittling a peace of wood. A razor sharp straight edged knife would make it almost effortless

the harder it is to cut something the more force you have to put into it. Then when the wood/ etc moves your momentum can carry the blade threw into unsuspecting flesh.

small blade, stays sharp. Light weight. Great pocket knife. Ive used it for many different applications. The tip isnt long enough to fit into all pipes though to clean them out.

Yup, if you want to look really cool, get good at doing those silly flip around tricks with a butterfly knife, if you want to protect yourself get a big stout Buck knife or something like that.

i'll give an amen to that.

butterfly's are jsut too slow to get out in certain circumstances.  they are neat tho!

ya a hatchet would be good.  2 problems: weight, memory   im jsut saying the smae knife straight edge verse serated ill take serated for wood cutting (not witling).  but most other things ill take teh straight.  which is why i have the serated gerber.  best of both worlds, very good quality knife.  havnt even had to tighten it up or oil it or anything.  ive had it about 2 years total know and had it sharpened once.  the battle scars on teh black suggest a hard dulling life, but it held up

I have no need for a knife for self defense. My little spyderco does the job it was intented to do. If I used a butterfly knife for woodsy things it would break. Butterfly knives have no purpose.

I carry a simple Swiss Army knife. It's the mountaineer style. Here's a pic of one like it:

I carry a Timberline Worden folder. It's a good small knife with a linerlock, AUS-8 steel blade so it holds a fine edge, and it takes a real beating with no problems whatsoever. Having a small knife handy is a nice convenience, I use it everyday and would be at a loss without it.
