Anyone into astrology at all?  Going beyond the horoscopes that you get in the papers etc, I've found it a really useful tool for understanding myself and my path.  In particular I really love this guy. He always bang on the money for me.

I respect what people hold for their own beliefs but it all seems made up to me.

To elaborate my reasoning:

There are 12 Zodiac signs (right?)
So that means there are only 12 overlapping possibilities for people and their personalities, daily fates ect, when in fact there are millions of unique individual daily outcomes and personality traits.
All unique and unpredictable. All able to be changed through free will.

I respect your opinion, but I think there is a little more to it than some people realise.

You are correct in saying there are 12 zodiac signs, but this is partly what I meant when I mentioned going beyond what most of us know as horoscopes. A lot of horoscopes just deal with vaguely trying to predict the future, which isn't the real point of astrology. The real point is to help a person understand themselves, their personalities, their strengths/weaknesses etc and the challenges they may face in life.

Most people just know their sun sign, which is the zodiac sign the sun is transiting when they are born.To get the real picture you need to look at a persons full birth chart which shows the position of everything when a person was born. That chart includes:

- 12 zodiac signs each having different characteristics
- The Moon and the planets each having different characteristics.
- The 12 houses, each representing a different aspect of a persons life.
- The position of each of the planets within both the zodiac signs and the 12 houses.
- The aspects of the planets, or their position in the chart relative to other planets. For example when two planets are in opposition (opposite each other) they will behave completely differently to when they are conjunct (very close to each other).
- The waxing and waning cycle of the moon.

On top of that, you have the current planetary transits to consider. That is, the current position of the planets in the sky right now. And then also how the current planetary transits might interact with a person's birth chart and produce unique situations, obstacles, and experiences on a day to day basis.

And there is a lot more to it than that. To properly learn astrology is a huge undertaking and takes years of study.

i've never quite understood how our position in relation to a grouping of very far away stars effects us.

so i feel like they say very generalized things that are a hit for most people.

it may work, i just cant figure out the mechanics of it all.

12 signs x 10 planets x 12 houses = 1,440 combinations.  And that's not counting all the different degrees (360) and aspects they can form.  So yeah, it's a bit more complex than you're making it out to be.  And no, it doesn't negate free will, any more than being born in a certain country to certain parents of a certain race does.  It is all part of the conditions that we inherited when we were born.  What we do with it is up to us.

To answer the OP's question, yes I'm into astrology.  I used to be a bit shy about it because of the stigma about it among the intelligencia, but I'm not worried about that anymore.  I've been doing readings for a while, and am in the process of setting up my own professional practice.

just curious, how did the knowledge of astrology enter the human sphere? who were the founders and how did they come to learn about it? I've always been a bit skeptical of astrology - though I am open to the idea that celestial bodies can play a role in human life, just more skeptical about how people know the details of this relationship

Humans have long noticed their connection to the world around them.  Astrology is just one manifestation of our interconnectedness with the cosmos.  There doesn't seem to be any discernible point in humanity's past when we didn't find meaning in the stars.  However the system of astrology we use today was first developed by the Babylonians and later refined by the Greeks.

Does everybody today use that one system?  I don't think so... I think there are different flavors and fundamentally different types of astrology.

Yes.  There is Western, Vedic, Chinese, and many other forms of astrology.  Even within Western astrology, there are different house systems people use.  I can understand how, to a skeptic, this would seem to undermine astrology.  All I can say is that in my experience, even though particular aspects will be different under different systems, when the chart is looked at as a whole, a lot of the same patterns will tend to emerge.  This is because what is at work here is not a system of mechanistic causality, but of synchronicity.  I don't care to justify it beyond that.  I use it, and it works.  That's good enough for me.

First of all the sun signs have moved forward a whole constellation since some 2,000 years ago when the Babylonians created the system. Also, it is physically impossible, according to modern understanding of physics, for the stars to have an affect on us. Their light?- the sun shines much more light on us than they do. Their gravity?- the person next to you in the room you were born in has more of a gravitational effect on you than mars did that day. The strong and weak forces?- no effect past an atomic distance.

All of this in the addition to the fact that for some reason astrologists fixate on the moment you were born and don't take into account all these mystical effects the stars and planets have on you for your whole life since that point. It really isn't any better than superstition.

2000 years ago Babylon had fallen 500 years before.

the astrology of babylon was probably 3000 years before that

I understand where you are coming from. I think in order to understand astrology you have to go past the physical. It's not that the planetary bodies are exerting a gravitational effect per se. It's more that the planets are a physical manifestation of different spiritual energies. But if the existence of spiritual energies doesn't resonate with you, then that's cool.

I can't claim to be a expert on it, and Silversoul has already given a good answer, but I would imagine the knowledge comes from the same place that other spiritual knowledge comes from.

Incidentally, my understanding is that the energies from the planets actually represent karma. As well as determining personality etc the position of the planets when we are born indicates the karma or lessons we will face during this lifetime. The daily transit of the planets help us to bring up and resolve our karma. So a person will only be affected by a certain planetary influence whilst they carry that energy inside of them. Once the karma is released, that planetary aspect will no longer have any effect over them because they have the learnt the lesson it was there teach, and they no longer carry that energy around with them.

This is why one day you might wake up feeling peaceful and happy, and then next day you wake up feeling grumpy or anxious, even though nothing in your life has changed at all. It's the influence of the planets.

Interesting little aside:

A few months ago I went to my local barbershop to get my hair cut, and the barber I ended up with after waiting in line and I exchanged hellos and got to talking a little bit.  After about a minute she asked me, "Were you born in late July, early August maybe?"  And I replied in the affirmative.  She said "Yeah, I just knew you were a Leo."

Been wondering about an explanation on that for a little while now.  Anyone care to enlighten me how she could know that just by talking to me for one minute?

What people know as their "star sign" is actually the position of the Sun. The Sun is the planet of the self, the personality. She is probably someone who knows her signs very well (or knows other people who are Leos well) and recognised the characteristics of Leo coming through in your conversation.  People with the sun in Leo are self-confident and tend to be charismatic and have magnetic personalities, something that would come across relatively quickly in conversation. Also, the Sun is Leo's ruling planet, which probably contributes to the strength of personality that shines through in a Sun sign Leo.
