amanita muscaria vs amanita rubescens - formosa

How can you tell the Difference between amanita muscaria and amanita rubescens and amanita formosa? i dont want to poison myself while out hunting for amanita muscaria, Are they both poisonous and Not "Acitive" like the Muscaria also

The true Amanita muscaria var. muscaria has a white stipe with pure white veil, bright red cap with white wharts (veil remnants)
I'm not sure about the look a likes in England, but I'm in alaska and only use the red caps with pure white veils (the same A. muscaria as occurs in Europe) for soma


Also, not yet. season for those starts in September

Amanita muscaria variety formosa has prominant scales around the bulb of the stem and rubescens is pretty smooth. AM var formosa has a yellow cap with white warts Amanita rubescens has a brown cap when young turning to tan and brown warts when young turning to greyish. Amanita rubescens bruises red where damaged muscaria does not (did Amanita mucaria var. formosa get raised to species status?)

Depends on where in the world you are located. Eastern United states Amanita muscaria var. guesowii will be yellow, with white "warts" white stipe, bulb at the base, with concentric rings around the top of the bulb/bottom of the stem. The rings are they key. Always look at the base of the stipe. In Europe and the west coast United states the color will be red.

Amanita rubescens/amerirubescens will be variable.Especially in the United states where there are more than 10 different species of rubescent Amanita. The main and most obvious difference is the fact that it bruises red, sometimes it wont bruise red right away(remember multiple species) It can take up to 30 min maybe longer to see the red. Often times right when you find it there will be red at the base, or up the stem. The color of rubescens will be metalic brown to beige almost always brownish/tan warts sometimes warts will have rubbed off. The base will be bulbous as with most Amanitas, and lacking in rings. Amanita rubescens is toxic raw...not psychoactive toxic but legitimate toxic. But edible and considered choice when cooked.

The mushroom that I have noticed often looks very similar to muscaria is Amanita flavoconia. There are several differences, the biggest being size, flavoconia is small in comparison. I have seen what looked like rings on the base of flavoconia and was certain they were just small muscarias... they were not. The color is also an indication, yellow cap with yellow warts, with a yellowish not white stem. There is also flavorubescens which is essentially a yellowish version of rubescens.

Did not know that was incorrect, looked it up found a link to amanitaceae.org referring to it as flavorubens, I trust Mr. Tullos, is this the preferred name? I actually have no experience with this particular species in the wild so I am going off from what I have read.

It's been a topic of hot debate and the reason is because it was described by Montagne(?) in France, but a close examination shows the material was mailed to them from Columbus Ohio (making it a valid name in the US, even though it was described by a European author). The second hurdle was that persoon Authored the name Agaricus Flavorubens, which would make it invalid, except no other author ever used that name to describe a mushroom, so his Authorship is therefor dubius.
