Amanita muscaria var. formosa

Found these on my ride home from work. They were growing in grass under a deciduos tree.
I hopped out and snagged the two nicest specimens.
They still had some slug damage.
I believe they are the formosa variety Yellow-orange Fly Agaric .
Also the white flesh bruises yellow.
The mature one is 6 inches in diameter and 5 inches tall.
They smell almost musty.
Notice the full veil covering the gills on the younger specimen.
How 'bout it?

Beautiful!
Those look like Amanita muscaria var. formosa to me! There is a very similar-looking species called the Yellow Blusher (Amanita flavorubescens), though, which could also be growing in your area right now and is poisonous. My book says that all parts of it stain pink when cut or bruised. I'm not sure how else it can easily be distinguised from the Yellow Fly Agaric, though.
The Yellow Wart, or Amanita flavoconia also looks kind of similar and is poisonous, but I'm fairly sure that's not what you have.
Any plans on cookin' those babies up, Effed? I hope I will start finding them in my area soon... I need to get out huntin' again!
Peace,
RebelSteve

Those look like Amanita muscaria to me. Those are great photos, and they show one of the key features for identifying this species - the volva forms several parallel rings of tissue at the top.
Happy mushrooming!

Cool, that is good to know!
Those photos do fuckin' rock!
How did you get a nice black background like that, Effed?

beatiful pictures.
i myself have never found A. muscaria var. formosa here in florida or ever. i have found several fruitings of A. muscaria var. muscaria on several occasions in europe however.
regarding its psychoactivity, other than the time of year, what is the difference between the two variations?

On the difference.. Im not really sure about the psychoactivity.
The only notable difference was the Yellow/Orange color, as opposed to var. muscaria that is more red.
Im still a little afraid to eat them.
I am trying an experiment.
I took some very nice spore prints and have made three very concentrated spore syringes. I plant to innoculate the roots of a conifer on my propery with all of them.
I have read on some peoples success with this, however I doubt it will work.
Its just for fun.

Hey, cool experiment, man! I hope it works... That would be uber cool!
I'm very leery of eating any Amanitas I find in the wild, too.
Peace,
RebelSteve

well, all i can say is check with 5 different descriptions from various sources and confirm them. do everything you can to make sure every milimeter of the mushroom is what you are looking for. after you are sure without a doubt what it is and EVERYTHING (especially for an Amanita sp.) matches the A. muscaria var. formosa descriptions, eat 1X1 (1X2) mm piece of the mushroom and wait for about 24 hours. correct me if im wront but i believe that amatoxins show signs in the human organism in the next 24 hours before killing you after a week.
be sure that you are POSITIVE of the id before doing this. if you are confident, try it. summer specimens or A. muscaria supposedly have more of the active chemicals than the so called 'poison' (ibotenic acid, muscarine, or muscamol something like that or one of those). although i believe one of those is psychoactive and one of the others it takes very large amounts of to be poisonous.
good luck and remember to be SURE of the id before before using internally.

not off hand but check out an online key. we really need to see or 'hear' the universal and partial veils. their shape etc and color. some detailed pics and stuff would probably get you an id because that Amanita looks fairly distinctive. hook us up.
