    #1766356 - 07/31/03 04:30 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I would like any inrofmation regarding look a likes to look out for and any information on finding them in the north Ga area and if there are any specific times when they are peticularly plentiful monthwise. Thanks for any help. Also if anyone has a print of this mushroom that they are certain of and would like to sell or trade it p.m. me.

I'm interested in this mushroom myself, I have looked alittle, still might think it's too early over hear. Be careful though, make sure you post pics of the bulb at the base of the stem here. Many Amanitas are very dangerous. Oh and you would not be able to fruit it indoors, or outdoors without certain trees around.

Here's a short, very incomplete list of Amanitas which could be confused with Amanita muscaria var. formosa. I am limiting the list to species found in the US (the worldwide list would be several times larger) with yellowish to pale brownish caps.

Amanita aestivalis
A. albocreata
A. brunnescens
A. bulbosa
var citrina
A. crenulata
A. cylindrispora
<--deadly!
A. elata
A. farinosa
A. flavoconia
A. flavorubens
A. frostiana
A. multisquamosa
A. morrisii
A. pantherina
A. populiphila
A. roseitincta
A. subnudipes
A. velatipes
A. velosa
A. volvata
A. xylinivolvata

While I have little doubt that you could look at photos of some of these species and say they don't look much like A. muscaria to you, in the field such distinctions are often much less easy to make. You'd probably be amazed at some of the mistakes people have actually made - some of them can be described only as baffling.

Since you're requesting a spore print also, maybe you weren't planning to eat them, in which case the consequences of an error are not as bad.

Are you planning to atempt to cultivate them? Amanitas are all mycorrhizal, living in association with the trees they fruit under. If you are, good luck - let us know if you get them to fruit.

I'll leave those who live in the northern Ga area to let you know when various things come up.

Happy mushrooming!

Oh no I was planning on eating them. I just thought a print could help with identification. (Looking at it microscopicly not macroscopicly) Pluss I wanted to see if I could just introduce them into a pine grove type of enviroment and see if something might happen.

toxic, A. pantherina has the same chemicals as A. muscaria, but they can be much more potent, right?

The primary toxins in both mushrooms are muscimol and ibotenic acid. In some specimens the concentrations of these toxins is higher in A pantherina. However, A. pantherina also has additional toxins that A. muscaria does not, apparently more often resulting in unpleasant effects.

I should mention that, even though I included it in the list, Rod Tulloss doesn't seem to think the true A. pantherina occurs in North America. Instead, there is a complex of similar species. If you read his page on A. pantherina he lists a couple of those species. I included it in the list because it's a species listed in pretty much all field guides, and most people here are likely to key some specimens out to it.

Happy mushrooming!

Tha only 2 Aminita's you can eat and have hallucinogenic effects are A.Muscaria and A.Pantherina, however i guess you could trip off of other aminitas but you will die after your trip, allthough you can die off of A.Muscaria and A.Pantherina too,but you wont if your careful.

that statement has almost no basis in reality whatsoever. there are many amanitas which contaime muscimol/ibotenic acid which but wich do not contain potentialy leathal compounds or not in levels high enough to be fatal at the dosage ingested for psychoactive effects.

Amanita is not a geus to play around with, but if well understood and respected, it can be fun.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
