Keep posting pics if you find them. I think this was a good discussion. Pay attention to the stem and base of the mushroom next time you show us pics. Carefully dig out the base so you can appreciate and remnants of the universal veil.

I just moved east last August (from northern California, on the Redwood Coast). I found some mushrooms last October (near lake Ontario) very similar to yours, but I couldn't convince myself that they were var. formosa. Some of yours look damn close to formosa, but others... borderline or definately not formosa. I've picked hundreds of Amanita Muscaria var. formosa out West, but ... they're different, here in the East.
You did the right thing tossing them out, even though it's not easy to do. One thing I've read, heard, and observed, is that the Amanita Muscaria Formosa will have some pretty distinctive concentric rings around the base (above the egg-bulb), which distinguish it from some of the other eastern amanita lookalikes.
Anyway, keep looking, and I appreciate you reporting the finds (I'm located in the Northeast part of North America.)
And ... be sure to do lots of research on amanita before you eat them, and be positive on your ID. I personally, have eaten them about 25 times, and I think Amanita Muscaria is probably the best "drug" in the world, but that's just my opinion. It's definately not as dependable as some of the other magic plants/fungus out there.
Good Luck!

Yeah I find some similar to your last pic about once a year at my mothers house. I have consumed them once didn't care for the buzz to much. I'm not sure if yours in the pictures are right or not, but to my amazement I just seen two growing in her yard. Couldn't pick em she was around . I'll post em soon.
