Where does Amanita Muscaria grow?
    #1391888 - 03/19/03 01:29 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

I used to live near this piece of land that had a large lake, and on the dam there was always dead rotting leaves and moist ground. During the fall, I would always find shitloads of really bright red caps with small white freckles and bleached white stems/gills.

I'm thinking about going back to find some, but I wanna know if it's even worth my time... where do these things grow?

WE'RE AT WAR AND YOU'RE ASKING ABOUT MUSHROOMS, WTF!!!!?????!!!!?????

haha... just kidding

They're a very seasonal mushrooms from what I've found. I've got a patch of A. muscaria that only fruits in October, so my guess would be that you won't find anything now :\

It depends on the area. They fruit mostly from late summer into fall. They are mycorrhizal with a number of species of trees (particularly pine, spruce, fir, birch, and aspen), and often occur in large numbers near the edge of clearings. I have also found them in large fairy rings in the forest.

Happy mushrooming!

Where I live in CA, they only fruit in the fall and early winter. They usually are growing around pine trees...and yes, they will fruit in large numbers.

By far one of the most beautiful mushrooms Ive ever seen

These were at the edge of clearings in the fall. I will produce pictures later this year when they pop up again...

Awwww.... So cute

Ohh... I have a question about Amanitas and other mycorrhizal mushrooms.
How do their spores germinate?
Does it absolutely need a "partner" for its mycelium to grow?

They grow abso-fucking-lutely everywhere around here in the fall. Look under conifers.

The ones I always find barely have any white spots on them. Most of them are REALLY small, and just have bright reddish orange caps. I have found a few big ones though. Found one last year that was almost the size of my head.

Here's one w/o any warts that I found the past fall.

(Notice that they have all fallen off and are surrounding the base of the stem)

The spores of Amanitas germinate in the same way as the spores of any other fungi do.

In order for it to fruit there has to be the merging of two compatible mycelia. One way to think of it is that in mushrooms, sexual reproduction (joining of "gametes") occurs in the organism after birth. The spores each contain only half the chromosomes needed for a full set.

If you have a mycelium which is formed from only one spore, you have a mold. Molds are asexual fungi. They are, of course, capable of reproduction, but only asexually.

That's the simplified version. Try reading The Fifth Kingdom by Bryce Kendrick for the details.

Uhh... I wanted to know if one could germinate the spores, for example, without trying to make it fruit.

In fungi, there isn't really such thing as a full set. Its more just like enuf to fruit. Its unlike humans in that it can have more than just 2 sets of genetic info (for example, 3 or 4).

If you have mycelium formed by one spore it is called haploid (half needed for meiosis) uninucleate (one nucleus per cell).

Moulds are of the Phylum Zygomycota.

Moulds are capable of sexual reproduction, just as almost every fungi is (the one exception I know of is the leaf-cutter's cultivated species, and then who knows?).

That's one of the main characters of fungi, the ability to repruduce by fragmentation, budding or sexually.

Yes you could. Whether they would survive more than a few days without meeting a host is another story.

Hum..I'm wondering if I would have enough time to prepare a liquid inoculum and spray it near some trees...

What if you just plopped a fat Fly Agaric into the blender for a few seconds. Then dig up some dirt around near the base of a pine tree and pour the inuculum all over the gashes.

That's exactly what they look like! Are they better if they have the warts?

No, it doesn't matter.

Just make sure you indeed have found A. muscaria...They will always have a membranous veil, bulbous stem, white gills and a white sporeprint. I think the stems are hollow..

Also, these mushrooms are usually pretty large.
