Liberty cap allies fruiting in Australia in Summer. * 2
    #19785747 -

I am posting here to obtain the opinion of people experienced in identifying Liberty cap mushrooms.
I have picked Liberty cap type mushrooms not P semilanceata fruiting in Australia from November to February. These mushrooms grow after a monsoonal trough in Summer in Qld. I have also found another related species growing in NSW also in Summer after an East coast low. Both these species come up in ditches and runoff gullies after very heavy rain.
They grow on manured ground not directly on manure. They exhibit a freshly cut grass or hay smell when picked. The Queensland ones do not turn blue until they are fairly old. Then the whole mushroom turns dark indigo blue. They have a pale brown cap that turns straw brown when dry. The taste is sweet with a metallic edge to it. The effects start off more like marijuana at first. Very cerebral with little body. After twenty minutes they really come on with a beautiful LSD like high.
The ones in NSW are smaller with a dark brown cap up to 2.5 cm across. They exhibit slight bluing at the base of the stipe. They also have the hay like smell but the taste is somewhat bitter. Effects are very similar to the Qld ones.,
Now what I want to know is what kind of tastes and effects people get off P.semilanceata and P strictipes. My reason for this is that the Liberty cap look alike mushrooms I have picked in Summer are of a much clearer high than say P.cubensis, P.subaeruginosa and Pan.cyanescens.
Any photos of Liberty caps or allies would be appreciated if you have tried them.

Any pictures of these mushrooms you collect?

Novemeber-February is the warmer part of the year(Summer) and P. semilanceata doesn't grow in tropical heat and has never been found that far North.

You sure you're not picking Panaeolus cyanescens?

No they aren't Panaeolus cyanescens. I have been in contact with a trusted identifier on Shroomery and when asked which Psilocybe species they resembled I replied Psilocybe samuiensis. I have also looked at photos of P. mexicana and can see a resemblance as well. Pan cyanescens grows on manure. These mushrooms do not. Just in the grass where manure has broken down. No I didn't have a good camera at the time. I never found them during the cooler months.

Just to clarify the Qld ones looked like P.samuiensis. The NSW ones were a dark brown colour and actually looked like photos of P. strictipes even though they occurred in Summer.

Well without pictures you're probably not going to get a lot joy and trying to guess what it is will be difficult.

Next time you find some don't eat them. Try and take pictures and save the mushrooms, take spore prints too. They may be something interesting.

There are thousands of photos of liberty caps on this site, however that is not what you have been finding. Perhaps Panaeolus cinctulus? Panaeolus bisporus? I guess I don't really understand the point of this thread.

I understand your doubts about these mushrooms being of the Psilocybe genus, but they are. Have all the characteristics. They are not Panaeolus. That I can assure you. I posted on the pub and had the thread deleted as they told me it was an April fools day joke on my part. It isn't. I have been picking Psilocybin mushrooms since May 1981 and have come across more than the two I have mentioned which are not documented to my knowledge. However after trying the first Psilocybe subaeruginosa of the season a couple of days ago my interest was sparked to find out if any Australians had encountered these mushrooms. This Summer when the heavy rains hit I'll check out the spot in NSW where I found the smaller brown ones. I'll have to travel up to far north Qld to look for the others after monsoonal weather in the wet season. I'd really like to get an identification on these mushrooms before I die of old age. I tend to procrastinate when it comes to this though as I'm more interested in actually eating mushrooms than having some fancy name for them.

One other thing I'd like to mention about these mushrooms is their potency. I have never found P. cubensis to be potent. Same goes for Pan.cyanescens. I did find Pan.cyanescens potent back in the 1980's but I became too used to them. I have found P.subaeruginosa to be potent when they have the chocolate coloured pleurocystidia. When they don't I actually think they are P.eucalypta and they have low potency. I agree with Stamets about his classification of those wood growing Australian mushrooms.
I first found the Qld mushrooms in 2006. I had been eating P.cubensis doses from 40g - 80g fresh and getting very little off them. Same goes for Panaeolus cyanescens. They would get me to a point where I felt I would trip but I wouldn't. Quite frustrating. I actually took the Gold tops and meanies back to the paddocks where I found them and vowed I would never eat them again. I went back to my house and went for a walk up my driveway and spotted the first ones in a clump of grass on the driveway. I found eight of them that were fresh with another couple that were too old and indigo blue black all over. I ate those eight and was surprised by the effect and intensity. After that I realised I had been walking past them in the back cow paddocks thinking they were a Conocybe species without even bothering to check them. The most I ever took was 2g dried and I was tripping like I did when I used to take acid. It was overwhelming but very clear. I also noticed that my dreams would become lucid to the point that I felt that those mushrooms had an ally like effect upon me. I thought I had found my helper and friend in those mushrooms. I dreamed about things which did happen both good and bad. I find the wood growing Psilocybe mushrooms I pick now to be boring compared to those Liberty cap type mushrooms. Anyway thanks for your replies even if they aren't much help.

Hi Heyowana, have a look at the mushrooms at this link below, are your mushrooms like them?

Thanks for the link. Alan gave me this link too. After seeing the Western Australian ones I would say they look very similar. I never found them on manure though. They were always close by to cow and horse manure. These match the ones I found in Qld I would say as far as appearance goes.

While on the subject I used to take people searching in the Radiata pine forests at 34 degrees S. I would see troups of mushrooms that match the description of P.pelliculosa. The people would be interested in P.subaeruginosa and relatives only. I tried them and found their effect weak but clear. I think 50 and up would be a good dosage. A couple of times I found what I thought were Radiata pine cones at first only to find that they were little mushrooms with sky blue stems all clumped together. They were a Psilocybe species. Their stems were thicker than the P.pelliculosa look a likes but the effect was the same I think. Perhaps being so close together altered the morphology a bit.

I was having a look at the thread 'Psilocybe samuiensis in New Zealand.' Interesting because the mushrooms I found in QLD had a cap like P.alutacea with a white ring around the cap like P.samuiensis. The cap diameter was averaging around 2cm in the cow paddocks. I found one with a cap diameter of 6cm. Next door to me the owner ran horses but not cattle. I had a look one day along the horse trails and found the same mushrooms but they were all large averaging 3-4cm cap diameter They were darker in colour and more robust looking. Their morphology was the same. It was like they were getting more nutrient from being near the horse manure than the cow manure.

I am on a roll now and can't stop. West of the dividing range in NSW on the sheep farms a small Psilocybe mushroom grows on sheep manure. It looks identical to a Gold top except it is tiny. Cap size is around 1cm across. The locals call it the Golden meanie because of its effect.
On the coast at 34 degrees S along with the true P.subaeruginosa another mushroom grows with a very thick stem. I first found it next to a creek below someones garden that had Azaleas and Rhodadendrons. It has a small cap in relation to the stem. Unlike P.subaeruginosa the cap detaches very easily when handled. Turns blue on the stem and cap like a sub but didn't have a white ring around the cap. The gills are less crowded as well.
Effects are of a creeper nature then melt down. Has a very strong body effect even the next day it is hard to walk around and lift things.I used to mix these with subs and got into a bit of difficulty. I would get the energy from the sub for about an hour then the meltdown effect occured. Wherever I was I couldn't move or even open my eyes if there were too many of the other mushrooms mixed in.
I tried these meltdown mushrooms separately for my own safety. Most I had was 6gm dried. One hour went by feeling nothing and then they would come on instantly in a wave. I was stuck to the ground tripping. These mushrooms would get large as well. I found some Gold top size about 50 meters down the creek from the garden. I never found them any where else.

It would be awesome if you could document these finds with photos, notes, and especially dried specimens sent to someone who can do microscopy and/or dna work :congrats:

Thanks for the inspiration. Most people I know my age don't get into mushrooms anymore. When I was a child I'd have dreams about some Indian (as in India) giving me mushrooms. I took them out of his hand broke the stem and they turned blue. I have always felt a familiar feeling when I take them. I have also noticed that people can become really hostile when I try to talk about my love of active mushrooms.
I was having a look at a thread on these forums about dosage for P.samuienensis. The fellow asking was an Australian saying that he has seen identical mushrooms growing here.
As far as documentation goes I'm surprised that people don't know about that little mushroom called the Golden meanie. There was a commune in Northern NSW where they used to cultivate them. They had even painted a picture of one on a sign not far off the Highway as you drove in there. That wasn't far from the QLD border and a couple of hours drive west from the Tablelands.
They would be fruiting now. Perhaps I should get my dogs and go for a trip up there. Might see some feral pigs.
The ones I called melt down mushrooms would start fruiting the same time as P.subaeruginosa. Usually by the end of April. Where as the subs would keep fruiting on the coast until July or even August sometimes, these ones would only fruit for about one month. I could head down that way in about one month and have a search for them.
There was a Paneaolus we used to find fruiting with the meanies. I used to think maybe Pan.Cambod....(excuse my lack of spelling skills) but I'm not sure. They showed up at about 32degrees S after Brahman cattle were introduced and mixed with the Herefords.
Unlike a meanie they would all come from the one spot in a cluster. They were smaller and always stayed a yellow golden colour. Their stem was thicker and always looked hollow if that makes any sense. They tasted really metallic and were harder to eat than blue meanies. They were stronger too.
I don't think I would bother about the P.pelliculosa look a likes. They were so common people must know about them. If not I'd be surprised.
