Funny you should ask that.

When I have taken people picking shrooms in a pasture I have always help those with me identify the liberty cap by going with each person for about ten to fifteen minutes and helping them pick liberty caps so they know what they look like.
I would later look into their bags of picked shrooms and find all kinds of other mushrooms in their bag besides the liberty caps.

One guy said "Well they all look like mushrooms to me."

Individuals picking liberty caps always seem to collect a few conocybes, who;s caps when drying have the same color of a liberty cap.

I have found people who have picked variopus species of Paneolus, particularly Panaeolus sphinctrinus and Panaeolus foenisecii.

In Hawaii some people who visit from the mainland (US) pick Copelandia mushrooms and refer to them as liberty caps which they say they picked in Oregon and/or Washington Or they'll pick a lo0t of Panaeolus antillarum which looks like Copelandia and say they get high on it, when it contains no chemicals.

So any mushroom in the field with a conical shaped cap could be mistaken for a liberty cap by someone who doesn't know what he is doing and a majority of people don't. This is evident by the large amount of people who end up in emergency rooms at hospitals each fall thinking they ate something poisonus.

Be on call for the Poison Control Center at harrboprview Hospital or the University Hospital or any other in the region each fall and you would see what I am talking about.

Remember that no poisonous mushrooms resemble liberty caps which grow in the field
