mold / slime detected in jar .... PC'ed for 90 min's can we re- inoculate.
    #18659748 -

Okay here's my question I feel like a lot of grain is being thrown out due to technical user and equipment errors ....

what do you think will happen if i lets say while inspecting my grain jars found a speck of green mold or slime in the jar... and I was able to detect the scent thru the filter ....

would it be smart to re seal the jar properly with a better filter and re-pc for 90 min's and consider the contents of the jar sterile??? whats the probability of this being a success?
contect will be sterile I shouldn't worry about anything inside the jar being alive after pc'ing for 90 min's at 15 psi?
You may choose many

When in doubt, throw it out. Grain is cheap and not worth playing with mold.

If it's already got mold growing in it, then get rid of it. Mold consumes the grain the same way Mushroom myc does. Why make it more difficult for the Mushroom myc then when you can use fresh?

If there is mold of any kind, always PC for 90 minutes before opening and dumping.

It is not recommended to PC them and try again using the same grains.

Kill the mold spores, then dump the grains, then wash out the jar with soapy water and re-use.

You will kill anything in the jars by pcing.  So option 1 is correct.

Can you re-inoculate?  Sure.  You can also do a lot of things you shouldn't.

Nutrients have already been absorbed.  Bottom line.

Start over.

but my question is .... won't they cannibalize on the now dead mycelium                                                                            I mean correct me if i'm wrong if you starve a human his body will eat itself it is made of the exact nutrients his body neeeds... lol

and when an army base gets his by a biological weapon the new army takes over the base and all weapons in it...

why cant my mycelium use the nutritions that were (pre chewed food) basically for them by the previous myc / mold/ slime??

Mycelium isn't going to use other mycelium as food. Don't think much beyond that because that pretty much stops the train. You can take a jar that has mold in it, pressure cook it, then inoculate it again, but the new healthy mycelium is just going to eat what's left in the jar.

Yea, it seems like a good idea.  It seemed so good that I tried it out.  I made up 30 half pint jars, with rtv/silicone lids. and 1 jar had contamed with cobweb.  Next run, I empty the 29 and fill with soaked grain the RR way and I decide to pc the 1 cobweb one and re-inject with lc.
The LC had been proven out clean on a petri dish.  Nocked up all 30 jars, all of them took off eventually but the one that lagged way behind all the others was the one with the dead cobweb.  That jar took an extra week to get going, once it got going it grew at a normal rate, then green mold showed up.  I pced it and tossed it.
about 80% of the jars turned good all the way to the end.

Maybe the cobweb had some kind of fungi inhibiting compound that survived the pc?  I have no idea.  I don't think I'll be doing that again...

I can't remember who did the write-up, but someone did one demonstrating that you can reuse jars that showed signs of contamination. Theoretically it checks out because with a good PC, you kill anything that's alive inside the jar. Just as it was said earlier though... just because you can doesn't mean you should. Grain isn't THAT expensive and I'd rather not waste my time on messing with contaminated jars. 60 minutes in the PC and in the trash with them.

The bigger issue is that molds produces chemicals to prevent other fungi from being able to colonize the substrate and those wouldn't be destroyed by the heat. In the case of some bacteria you're also looking at a huge amount of endospores that would would take a lot longer destroy than the smaller amount normally present on fresh grains so the chance of the bacteria problem recurring even after pressure cooking would be high.

Why PC a contaminated jar before throwing it out instead of just throwing it out? I put all my things in the compost even so I welcome molds and bacteria to help break things down. So long as the don't open the contaminated jar in the house I don't really see how it'd be increasing the overall spore load.

PC mold infested jars before opening them, because if you dont, when you open the jar the mold spores will get all over you, your hair, your clothes, and back into your grow room.....increasing the mold spore count in your house.

Won't a lot of the spores survive pcing anyway? I thought the reason we soak our grains was specifically to germinate the spores bc hey are hard to destroy otherwise. I'd also think that under such pressure they'd start being forced out of the jar through the filter. If they're all burst under the pressure then that won't matter, but assuming they're not once you open your pressure cooker you have them all over the house.

Once they are PCed they are dead.

It does not matter if they get in the house at that point....dead is dead.

So does it not matter that we germinate out grain then? Or not the grain itself of course, but all the spores on it.

It's a precaution. It won't necessarily do harm in every situation. Emptying a bacteria contaminated jar outside is not going to harm anything you have growing inside. For mold I'd say use your best judgement and any attempt to empty a mold contaminated substrate jar outside should be done immediately upon seeing the first speck of mold and with the understanding that you could have spores on your hands and clothes afterwards.

Those are endospores, which is dormant bacteria. Mold spores cannot survive PCing, they die at low temperatures. Trichoderma Virde spores for example, I just happen to have this info on hand , are effectively killed after only 10 minutes at a mere 140F. That over 100 degrees lower than what the PC temp reaches.
