You can kill it with heat, i take a lighter or a flame torch and hold it to the affected area for about 15-20 seconds, and then i let it cool, i do this 3 times, and i've been successful at it. good luck.

... oh yeah i forgot one thing i forgot, you're supposed to be lighting the glass with the lighter, dont like. try to take the cake out some jewish way and hold the lighter to it. i'm hoping you have more common sense. :smile:

do it right NOW when it appears or it will spread like wildfire. burn the outside of the glass around the affected area NOW or you will be doomed.

lol ok thanx man. i hope it didnt spread too deeply in there...wait im pretty sur ei remember seeing it on top, above the lid :frown: how can i get to it if it's there...i guess i can try turning it upside downa nd burning the lid

I had a nice looking jar that I broke up to case and it had a nice solid dark green core. Very nice. No signs of it could be seen on the outside.
Good luck with burning, I'd probably throw it.

well i did the burning thing but i didnt hold the lighter on for that long (i forgot how long u said) so ill do it again. this wont hurt the mycellium too badly, will it? i figure that the area right around the green mold will probably die, but the rest should be fine, right? if the burning works, how will i know? will i see some sort of sign that its dead, or will it just stop spreading? also, if i cant fix this jar, will i be alright if i case with the other 2 jars and not the normal 3?

might i suggest using a magnifying glass to focus sunlight thru the glass sides of the jars and burn/kill the green mold while still in vitro ?
if you focus the light into a tiny point you should be able to cauterize the area without damaging nearby mycellia, more precise than a lighter, imo.

IMO I would throw it away. Unless you get it very early there is hardly any chance it will go away. I wouldn't eat a shroom from a cake that had mold on it.. Do what you want though. :-)

hey..when did the lighter idea first appear on these boards? i posted it like a month ago and a bunch of people told me all these reasons that it wouldnt be safe(even though it is, in certain cases). has this been around for awhile? or did i i invent it?
just curious.

Forget it, toss the cake. When the green is to be seen it is allready rotting through the cake - the best you will get is a cake that produces hundreds of small dead caplets and looks ugly for months till it withers.

I agree with Benzl. I had 4 cakes that were taking twice as long to fully colonize as my other four that had already been cased. I figure that some moisture got in along with some contams because they stopped colonizing and a bluish green fuzz (along with cobweb on the top) started taking over. I chucked the cakes outside in the compost heap and when I cut one up for curiosity sake it was pretty much green inside. Cakes with contams at the colonization level don't stand too much hope of making it to fruits.

Hey E tard (chill handle, by the way), I'm planning on using the shroom wizards guide too in about a month. Any suggestions? How's it going ? And where did you find those mason jars that are a half pint? I can't find them....also isn't a half pint really small?

Well EraSmus you can find the mason jars at your friendly neighborhood walmart(unless they arent supplied well, god knows i had to travel 3 towns over to finally get them)K-Mart also supposedly has them(dont have a k-mart around here)good luck finding those mason jars they can be rather elusive :smile:

throw it away. If you think that cauterizing the spot will do it then think of this: you birth the cake then mushrooms start to grow...etc. Even if you picked a mushroom on the opposite of the "non" contaminated spot it maybe infected and it maybe not. But some molds and bacterias are deadly if consumed. do you really want to take the risk...your life?

"Any odd colors that might appear are contamination and the jar must be thrown out. Do not take any chances. If you think the jar might be contaminated, throw it out!. Some molds and bacteria produce toxins that can kill you. Just because a mushroom is growing on the opposite side of the cake from the contamination does not mean you are safe. The mycelium network carries nutrients and moisture to the mushrooms from far away and can easily pick up the toxins and bring them to the mushroom. The fact that you are using this guide means you are not an experienced mycologist. You do not know which molds and bacteria are deadly. Do not take a chance." mmgg

yeah i cased wtih the contaminated jar (i couldnt get online to read your posts in time unfortunately) and even though there was no green mold that i put into the tray, i guess spores were floating away cuz now its taking over. :frown: i guess i had bad luck my first time
