About the lids on grain jars when sterilizing
    #916800 - 09/29/02 12:41 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

Say if I have a quart Kerr Jar filled with rye grain and a plastic lid with a hole in it with a filter disc should I screw the lid down tightly and place a piece of tape over the hole when I pressure cook? Or should I screw the lid down loosley and tape the hole when I pressure cook? What kind of tape do people use? I read a tek that wasn't very clear on the matter but they said they use foil tape. Does anyone know where to get foil tape?

Foil tape isn't necessary. Screw down your plastic lid with a micron filter disc underneath; cover the lid with two coffee filters that are secured with a rubber band. Pressure Cook.

Alternatively you can just close the lid, and then wrap with tin foil. I have also used duct tape and masking tape sucessfully, while keeping the jar lid *slightly* lose.

Your mileage may vary.

Matts,

Everybody has an opinion -- or differing experiance on differing things.

Have you ever used coffee filters on the outside of jars that you PC'ed ?

Example:

Besides a filter disk or material inside the jar, under the lid.

I have used double coffee filters, rubber banded over the outside of the lids for 6 months.

They don't get soaked, at least not in an AA PC.

They get damp in the steam (duhhhh). But, DRY--- instantly when removed from the PC while still hot.

Doing so has lowered my contam rate to about 1 in 100 quart jars. That is not bad.

Hey, I don't disagree that tin foil also works fine. I just prefer the coffee filters, as -- they are cheap & I have had good results -- using them.

6T

I don't know foil tape just sounds a hell of alot easier than ruberbanding a bunch of jars. Tin foil dosen't sound too bad though. Thats alot of rubberbands. Do any of you people think that there would be any difference to coffee filters and foil tape?

Don't use foil tape. It's expensive and not worth it IMHO. Just use masking tape.
