Mixed grain jars, problems

I have moslty used brf/verm. Recently tried using a mixed rye/barley/oat grain substrate. Did not work, dried out easily, smelled terrible. I don't have a pressure cooker just boiled them, and let them soak before sterilizing in jars with plastic lids in the microwave. Is it possible to use grain w/o a pressure cooker? Any advice would be cool.

You are going to need a pressure cooker.....I got mine at Goodwill 4 dollars

I most certainly will get one, but right now the micro is all I have. Was just wondering why it worked with brf and not with grain.
