you really should use a casing layer. it can be as simple as plain vermiculite but if you want something better and cheap i would go with coco coir. you should be able to get it at a garden supply shop for about $3-4 dollars a brick (one brick can do many casings). some people say they don't even sterilze it but i would. if you are just trying to cut time and don't want to wait the extra days you can try just dumping it into a container without casing it just make sure you report back to let us know if it works and how well it works. to maximize your harvest, however, casing is the only way.

You say casing is the only way. Picture this. Lets say you take say an 8x8 tray, mix up your rye grain basically 1:1 w/ water (little less water) and then colonized it COMPLETLY from about 5-7 agar slabs, then init'd pinning, and took the cover off.
Do you think this would work?

You say casing is the only way to go, what distinct advantage is the casing?
If you have your humidity maintained at at least 90

Casing allows the mycelium to produce rhizomorphic growth, which will increase the amount of primordia it can form. It also stores water and prevents overlay(as long as it's not filled with nutrients). The advantage to this is that you can allow more air circulation in your terrarium without worrying about overlay. If you're using a humidifier, you get good air circulation and good humidity, but you still don't have as much rhizomorphic growth.
