In the DB kit they use rye bags which work really well to mix with shit. So i was just wondering if anyone has a good method of prepairing rye bags in a sterile and proper way.

i havent done the bags yet but ill tell you from just common knowledge that ive learned with rye grain.
1# If the rye grain is a whole grain cut it up until youve reached the desired amount you want to use.
2# presoak the rye in boiling water for 24hrs.
3# squeeze out all water and place in jars.
4# if you are using a pressure cooker cook for 15-18psi. for one hour to an hour and a half. if boiling...boil for at least one hour-two hours.
5$ let cool for one day and innoculate with spores.

try 3m's no shake grain tek for bag prep (he uses wheat)... and heres a recent thread about using oven bags instead of filter patch/autoclavable bags that was being discussed a few days ago: oven bag thread
btw, fungiperfecti sells premade filter patch bags: fungi perfecti's catalog (go to media containers & accessories and scroll down about 3/4 of the way down). but making your own sounds more fun, and less expensive (you need a sealer w/ the premade ones...)
gluck! HQ thinks the bag thing is neat, and if she gets her pc'ing "down" she'll be trying them soon...

It lets the mycellium breathe while blocking contaminates. In 3M's tek he uses polyfill instead of a filter patch.

i dont have ryches kit and havent seen one, so i dont know if theyd have the patches (pretty sure they do though- havent seen anything about bags without em). theyre just like the polyfil lids/filter disks for lids on quart jars- they provide air exchange while keeping contams out.

but scanning the archives here, i notice hip has an ovenbag tek with no patch... under grow/find- hip's bulk tek- it would seem though the patch/polyfil/whatever is preferred now... but, his is also a brf/verm substrate, while all grain/bs recipes seem to require air exchange. (am i wrong? let me know...)

sorry people, let me further explain...sometimes i dont use the correct words for my sentences.
#1 - If you are using rye grain ( whole, uncut, the grain not the seeds, the one that looks like wheatstraw ) cut the long pieces to 1-3" length. cut up however much you may need ( ex. 10 1gallon jars, 12 1pint jars, etc...) and place the grain in a container. pour boiling water on it. dump the water out on the 12th hour and pour new boiling water on it. on hour 24, remove all water possible and fill jars or bags.

I think you are confusing things.
Grain is grain - straw is straw.
I think you are talking about straw -> thin stalk with a lenght of about 2-3 feet, often pressed in balls.
rye grain -> small 1/8 of an inch long oval seeds.
Tis tread is about rye grain.

yes you are talking about rye grain seed i got confused about this too. i bought rye grain from fungi perfecti and it was seeds. after it was done i went to my local feed store and bought rye grain. they were stalks about 2-3 feet and it looked like dark wheatstraw. a little different appearance but thats what it resembles. all im using is the whole grain, not just the seed. you mean to tell me noones ever used the whole grain?? i buy 50lbs. for $8

Why steeping the rye, it can be pc'ed with the water needed at once. Use 175 grams of rye to 200 ml of water (better 2 use a bit less than a bit more water).
If u pc this mix one hour you will have sterile hydrated rye ready for innoculation!

What you bought at your local feed store wasn?t rye grain, it was ryestraw.

for RYE BERRIES not straw: I place 2 1/2 cups of rye GRAIN in a 1 quart jar. I like to rinse the grain with tap water. Do this by puttin some tap water in, give it a shake and strain out with the lid. Repeat once or twice if desired. Be sure to shake out all the tap water you can. The I fill the jar right up to the neck with mineral water (try to find a brand w/o magnesium). Place the lid on and let that jar sit 24-30 hours and then drain off any remaining water in the jar. There is ususally not much. The grain can be split into 6 half pints about 2/3 full for shaking, mixed into substrate formulas, or just PCed in the quart jar. I like to PC the rye for an hour at 12-15 psi. The same for any substrate containing rye. The jars can be placed in a covered rubbermade with the lids cracked. Shakable jars can be innoculated with: small chunks of cakes (to extend your existing work), slices from agar work or just plain spore water from a syringe. If using spore water, shake the jar after introducing the spores. The others can be shaken after about three days and every day or two after that. Shakable jars can colonize like the wind. A half pint jar (with a chunk of cake or piece of agar) filled 2/3 to 3/4 full will colonize in about 6-8 days when this shaking schedule is followed. Use the rye for whatever you wish. Spread it out and case it just the way it is OR better yet, use it to innoculate some wheat straw or compost. I hope this helps a little.
BTW--Rye straw sounds VERY interesting. I need to go in search of a feed store. I get organic rye berries from Wholefoods

yeah i guess it is. i thought it was grain. the purpose of steeping before is killing endospores before or just releasing them from the straw/grain.

this works excellent for me.
1. 2 cups of rye per half gallon jar in a big pot.
2. every 10 cups of rye i add a extra cup (so 11 for 10, 22 for 20 etc)
3. fill up with water and drain atleast 6 times, stirring the beans around each time to clean off dust and bugs. you will know when they are clean, because the water will be clear.
4. add 1 tbsp gypsum, put the lid on the pot and let it soak for no more than 16 hours. 24 seems a little long for me because my rye starts to germ in the water.
5. bring the pot to a slow simmer for 35 to 45 min. (dont start the time until they start to simmer. takes about 30 min for that) stirring about ev 10 min.
6. drain in strainers, run cold water thru the strainer and rinse the beans. let sit for 20 min. fill 3/4 of any size jar , because you want room to shake. half full if you are going to do grain to grain transfers.
7. sterilize for 75 min at 15 psi. i like to ster at 17 or 18 psi. if ya have a gauge i recommend that if not go for around 90 min
8. let cool and innoc
9. you dont need much spore solution. 2-4 cc's in a half gallon jar. the beans are hydrated perfect. dont want it too wet in there
hope this helped its a really good moisture ratio
