sterilizing jars in pressure cooker
    #310177 - 05/05/01 11:10 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I am about to begin, for the first time, sterilizing my jars. Do I need to lay anything at the bottom of the pressure cooker? I have a metal ventilation thing that goes on the bottom, will that do?

If it keeps the jars off the bottom a little it will do--but if not put a washcloth on the bottom YOU DO NOT WANT DIRECT HEAT going to the jars

behind every great fortune there is an even greater crime

cbee- just use the pf tek & boil your jars in a waterbath for an hour like the tek outlines. HQ's boiled jars exactly following the directions & has had a 1/12 contam rate in the past. (just got a canner though). dont know about a killer substrate tek, but brf/verm has been working so far. ::grin::

m0ck... curious if you mean malum in se (or malum prohibitum)? i have not heard malas intent. malum prohibitum would be poetic (something that is probibited by law/statute only- a manmade law with no grounding in morality)... malum in se would get you jumped by most here (prohibited by ethics and general morality- wrong as *sin* for lack of a better word). they both refer loosely to the requisite mens rea (state of mind) required for a crime... basically (and not across the board) a malum in se crime would require specific intent to commit, malum prohibitum prolly only a general intent. (the more serious the crime, the more they havta *prove* you were in a specific state of mind required by law to be guilty). i guess if you *wanted* to, you could say - this statement was made without requisite mens rea ... but that's still not rite ... as far as negating an element of the crime- you just cant say you dont have the requisite intent to commit a crime (writing words on a page is not a crime though) for the intent to be negated. plus acknowledging you dont have the correct state of mind to commit a crime.. the kneejerk reaction would be (for me anyways) that you do- since you acknowledged it exists.

im not a lawyer yet though... *but i play one on tv* ::grin:: so, dont follow my advice.

Pick up a cheap pressure cooker at your local thrift shop. Boiling will do in a pinch but a pressure cooker is much handier and makes it easy to sterilize your jars as well as used needles, jars that held contaminated cakes, lab instruments, you can even cook in it!

Yes, the metal piece with holes in it will keep the jars from getting to hot due to the extreme heat from the burner and cracking. Do not use without it.

If you have issues paying the $20 - $25 for a pressure cooker, try the 9er TEK. I had my doubts about this tek, but it really works great!
