Substrate burned in jars in pressure cooker, HELP!

Hey everyone,
Today was my first time putting jars in my pressure cooker. I have 5 verm/bfr jars that i put in my small pressure cooker for 55 minutes. I am not very skilled at using a pressure cooker though. My cooker has no screen to stop the jars from touching the metal bottom. I put in about 2 inches of water. The jars were directly touching the metal bottom of the cooker. When the cooker was cooled i opened it and found my jars different. The top lid of the jars had been bent outwars alot. It was still closed and not broken but it was bent outwards. The bottom of my jars was burned a little. The verm/bfr has one dark brown/black spot in each jar.
What did i do wrong? What can i do to prevent this the next time i make my jars? Can i still innoculate these jars? I need to know ASAP because i have to innoculate soon!
Thanks VERY much for any help!!

Next time place a towel between the jars and the bottom of the pressure cooker to act as a buffer.

Alright so the burning was because the jar was touching the metal bottom. But why did the top of the jars bend outwards? You say i should put the actual lid on upside-down so the rubber seal is facing upwards, then tighten it with the ring?
I thought the jar had to be tightly sealed, why is it better to have it loosely sealed?
I really appriciate ya'll for helping me out here!
