microwave safe tupperware instead of jars?
    #863060 - 09/04/02 08:31 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I was searching (trying to find a grocery storethat sold the allmighty 1/2 pint jars)
It was then that i had stumbled upon a suggestion to use microwave safe containers....It was said that they could be sterilized and i just wanted to know if they could be boiled for a PF tek

probably will but i would be weary of the plastic melting; even on a microscopic level and/or emitting harmful palstic burning vapors. try it if u want but i dont suggest it. but make sure you at least have a washcloth or something on teh bottom of the pan so they dont melt to the bottom.
or just use a regular drinking glass topped in tinfoil. glass kicks ass; all potheads know this

You can use pretty much anything to colonize substrate. If they are plastic, common sense tells me they would melt. If they are glass you should be ok. Dont boil them in the mircowave tho.

I've heard of it. never wanted to try it. My friend did with some wild stuff he spore printed. The substrait colonized, but was contaminated. More likely to do with his poor sterility practices.

It will work, but if you presure cook it, try and not have it touch metal. It can prolly withstand the water, and heat, but not direct metal contact....It also depends on the plastic, but ive seen some surrable onces at the store

Well since pressure effects the boiling point of things, would it effect the melting point? I know it has some effect on it, but not to any extent that would make much difference that i know of... Anyways, any ideas?

ummmm... do the jars HAVE to be 1/2pt?? I was just wondering if you could just use a very large or very small jar. Shit, maybe a shotglass with 1/8cc might work. I'm new and have all these crazy ideas in my head. Someone set me straight.

You could use a shotglass, sure.  You'd pro'lly end up with what looks like a fuzzy cork when you went to fruit, but hey, maybe if you made about thirty or forty you could make a small casing?

But yeh, the advice so far has been accurate.. plastic could work, definately less safe.  My fish has used everything from baby food jars to large pickle jars, each with varying degrees of success.. experience is the only way to learn.

On the other hand, if you decide to go with the shotglass method, I'd love to see some pics and results!  Good luck.

There is really nothing in the PF tek that is difficult to find. Half pint canning jars can be found at many Wal Mart stores and at most Ace and True Value hardware stores. You can also find drinking glasses that will work. You also may be able to find jelly at grocery stores that is sold in suitable jars.
Not to direct this at you personally *cough* but people should not be on here every day telling us that they can't find verm or canning jars. They are both easy to find, and they can both be ordered over the web if you don't mind spending twice as much money. BTW, the DEA isn't going to break down your door for buying glass canning jars from the True Value website. So just go buy something, okay? My advice is to get canning jars one way or another...I like to use the outer lid screwed over two layers of foil with additional foil over the lid.

I've been trying to tell people for quite some time now that the disposable Ziplock containers work great!! They can be PC'ed without melting. After 3-4 uses the cover becomes loose..I just tape it on for a few more uses. Give them a try,you won't be sorry!
