Mold growing on stumps * 1
    #18405883 -

For the last few months I have seen significantly more mold on stumps left after cutting to harvest than in divots left by tearing.

I'm still not sure why this is, I'm still playing with different variables post-first flush to minimize this.

However, for my next twenty tubs or so I'm going to go back to twist-n-pull and see if my results improve.  The divots in my substrate seem to recover...the stumps get mold in 3 days flat.

Regardless of the cause, I wanted to make it known that stumps can and do rot.  Here's some nice green fuzz to look at, each is growing over where stumps were left after harvest:

ive had that happen before but it was when my tubs werent dialed in.  for the most part they revert now that i have used a few of your mono tips.

i would imagine your tubs are half ass dialed in .

That is fucking weird.

I am so cereal!

How often do you clean your fiskars?

Hacker, I thought the same thing a couple months back and I gave them a long soak in vinegar...ended up rusting the spring and had to buy new fiskars

I clean them with an alcohol-soaked paper towel and I make sure to do it before and after I harvest. I never leave any chunks or small pieces stuck to the scissors and yes, ty, my tubs are dialed in. This guy named Frank has a pretty good tek

Honestly though I'm sure I will figure it out, given enough time. As I'm sure you know my entire cultivation experience has been one huge uphill battle against the green.

I thought it was crazy and had a few particularly "colorful" tubs to share. I figured I'd at least dispel the idea that stumps don't rot, something I even stated up until a few months ago.

Muy interesting.  I've always twist-and-pulled myself, was almost thinking of switching too.. lol.  I usually don't get contams on my tubs before 3 flushes.. and I have mistakenly taken out some yelp-with-pain sized chunks out.

Everyone mycological battle with the green is there whether they admit it or not!

Man, I always twist the stumps out.
I've heard repeatedly " the mycelium will re-absorb them" ect.
Re-absorbtion of 65 thumb sized stubs? Hell no.  The most common thing I see both in edibles and cubage is bacteria from leaving fruit tissue on.  Shiitake stumps bring the green quick.  Sure, in theory the mycelium would absorb the tissue but it mostly seems to "busy" to bother.

If I twist slowly, with care, and minimal pull, usually damage is minimal.
Many of the "rules" that are seemingly set in stone should be more open to adaptations for preference and the avoidance of problematic situations.

Thanks for sharing dude.
P.s. I like that shade of green haha "emerald city"

After 40 years of growing millions of mushrooms including our current commercial production, I've never had mold growing on a stump left over from cutting.

You have another issue.

Mushrooms which are lightly attached at the base can be twisted out without causing divots.  Mushrooms which are securely fastened to the mycelium block should be cut with a sharp clean knife.

That's what mine looked like after cutting and the second and third flush weren't Great nothing grew nears the blue/black stumps  I've found twist and pull works fine and shrooms grow right next to where I took shrooms

I've seen you say this for a long time, RR. It's actually why I started cutting instead of twisting the fruits in my monos.

What do you think the issue could be?

I've gone through the list of what I know.

Sub is properly pasteurized.
Spawn is clean.
First flush never gets mold.
Fruiting conditions are good.
Second flush, stumps grow molds before divots.
I've tried no dunk, no mist, light mist, quick dunk, heavy misting, fanning once or twice a day, etc.
I've also tried popping the polyfill from both top holes and misting to keep the RH high.

I've seen this happen across hundreds of tubs and it started when I started snipping instead of tearing last year.

maybe your strain of mushrooms is highly susceptible infection of that strain of green mold

Initially it did cross my mind but this is not strain-dependent though.

The tubs pictured above are 4 different ones, each with its own isolate. I've not done an MS grow in quite some time either. Regardless of variety or particular strain, I see this across em all.

hey frank, obviously you know how I grow. I don't cut mine out and sometimes i rip a bit of the sub off when harvesting and i always get my desired 2 flushes. try carefully harvesting by hand and see if you get better results, i'd be interested to see those results. i wonder if your trimmers would survive a 20 minute PC cycle at 15 psi?

that may be the best explanation, whatever you cut with is just covered in green mold spores... but you probably thought of that

I've tried alcohol soaks, vinegar soaks, bleach soaks...I wipe the blades down every time I harvest (before and after). I've been trying to best this issue to little avail.

God, I'll let you know how twisting treats me.

I would throw them in the PC but I harvest in open air, I don't think they'll stay clean for long

Well dude, you're gonna have to harvest at sub level with a laser!
