Re: What is cobweb mold and what to do about it??

Cobweb mold is pretty nasty stuff. Start treating it with h202, hydrogen peroxide immediatly before its to late to save it.
Also if this is your first time casing, be sure what your seeing is actually cobweb mold. But just to be safe, its best to treat it with h202, the mycelium will recover.
You can find more pics of it on my website under the cobweb mold section, including how to treat it. www.thehawkseye.com/cobweb.html

I have a similar situation, except that the cottony mold is growing while my shit is still in the jars. can i treat it with hydrogen peroxide now, and if so, how do I do it?? Thanks

Does anyone know if it would be okay to inject h202 directly into my jars? Or should i wait til full colinization, and then try to kill the cotton?

Chase, stick with the peroxide. Anything else will kill the mycelium
Vinney, I have never seen cobweb invitro. I could be wrong because I have rarely had any problems with cobweb but it could just be the mycelium growing through the verm layer. Let it grow

Thanks 3mshrm, you have my hopes up again, the only thing is that the stuff that appears to be cobweb mold, looks much different than the mycelenium. It is much more see through, and well.. cottony looking. I'll see what happens in the next few days.

what strain are you growing? i have heard that some strain's mycelium is more cottony that rhizomorphic.

good luck

cobweb mold is more greyish than most mycelium. When it gets thick it is very obviously not mycelium.

HeyVinnie, sometimes a high concentration of mycelium growth with no 'pinning' results from 'higher' than normal humidity..Do you know what your humidity factor in chamber is?

I am trying to grow P. Cubensis amazonian. And the cotton mold is definately getting thicker, and it looks a lot different than the mycellenium

I just examined a batch of jars that I started 2 weeks after my first batch, and i have cotton mold growing in teh bottom of one of them. This time I know its not mycellenium, cause its in the bottom of my jars. It looks just like what I presumed was cotton mold in my other jars too.
And in my other jars, the mycellenium and mold are growing up against each other. I think its too late to save it though. I was thinking of taking it out of the jar and trying to get h202 just where the cotton is, but I think it'll come back anyway. Won't hurt to try.
So so far, 3 of my 8 jars have this mold. Does anyone know what I could be doing wrong to cause it? I tried to steralize everything real good. Could it be because i used ground up brown rice instead of brown rice flour?
Peace.

You might try birthing cake, crumble it and then case it, keep misting daily w/ a 15:1 h202/h20 solution..keep it up until you see mycelium coming through top layer and then quit misting..As far as the rice flour, you did right by grinding your own, its more nutritous...

ok, 3 quick questions. how exactly should i case? and two, the solution should be 15 peroxide: 1 water. And 3, the h202 will also kill the mycellenium to an extent if i spray them too, right?
Thanks a lot for your help.

You might try SOS tek for casing, by 15:1 ratio i mean (1part peroxide , to 15parts h20) and 'no' the peroxide solution will not kill mycellium..RockOn

Before you guys get to worried your jars are contaminated with cobweb mold, be aware many strains grow cottony mycelium. The ecuador for example.... it mostly grows a cottony mycelium but fruits fine.
If you have cobweb mold in your jars, then you must have a high concentration of it around your growing area, or the spores had cobweb mold attached to them. If whoever you got your syringe from had an infected casing with cobweb mold, and they made prints, syringes, the cobweb mold will be carried with those spores. Hopefully who ever you got your syringes from was kind an honest enough to cut their losses and not take spores from those mushrooms.

Anyway, when treating cobweb mold, use 3% solution directly from the bottle, just like you get it at the store. Dont dilute it down, it wont be strong enough.

I also did some experimenting a while back with spraying completly healthy cakes at birth with h202, then casing them. Only 1 out of 4 casings managed to fruit, and it wasn't very impressive at that. Just a little food for thought.

Thanks Ryche. I konw what you're saying about mycellenium being cottony, however there are two very different growths in some of my jars. I am growing P. Cubensis Amazonian.
Strangely, in one of my jars, the weird shit (which I presume cobweb mold) is in the bottom of my jars, no where near any of the mycellenium. I sterilized well too, or at least I think I did, I boiled for over an hour. I may however have had some extra water come into the jars through the holes when boiling, could that be a cause?

that's odd, ryche.
i have noticed that h2o2 will slow casing colonization but i routinely spray cased cakes with 3% straight from the bottle and other than the occasional deformity, they fruit fine.
