Cobweb's downfall, H2O2, Saline Solution? Interesting!
    #2283948 - 01/29/04 02:41 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hello all

My friend recently had 2 casings (not casings but spawn runs 85% colonized actually) that became infested with cobweb mold.

As soon as it was noticed each one was treated by removing it from it's incubator, opening it up on a shelf above 1 of 2 HEPA filters, given light, good air circulation and treated with a solution.

Of course, the noticeable spots were removed, but it had pretty left it's mark on the entire spawn.

One was treated with a combinbation of H2O2 and bleach water (1/50th bleach, 1/10th H2O2, so it was 2% bleach and 10% H2O2 and 88% water). This was done by spraying it with the solution 2- 3 times a day. No mycelial damage was noticed, the casing has been rehydrated and after 2 days no signs of the creeping cobweb.

The other was treated with saline solution for contact lenses as per the above. It also appears to have sufferd no mycelial damage, and no cobweb seems to show up.

I hope this can be of help to some people, if you have a ? pm me.
If you think I am not out of the woods please let me know also.
Wish I had pics.

Thanks for your sharing your knowledge, that's an interesting experiment.
Just a thought. I don't think it's a good idea to mix h2o2 and bleach, in fact they react if mixed, so be very careful. Another important aspect is that such mix will result in the release of oxygen as a consequence of the reaction. In such case, the amount of both chemicals will be gradually reduced until one of them is spent and the reaction stops. So, you don't gain that much by mixing h2o2 and bleach.

Hmmmm interesting ... so basically the halflife (for lack of a better word) of both of the agents in bleach and H2O2 are greatly decreased when they are combined? Would this weaken them or essentially make them pointless? The cobweb still has not returned so that is a plus, that could just be because of the light and good air circulation my friend gave them for 60 or so hours.

Thanks

Well, both. It depends mostly on the amount of each chemical and water you used in the mix and the elapsed time since its fabrication and its use. You could end up with just a little bit of bleach or a little bit of h202 or almost none of both.

It helps but i think that mix, although it was somewhat weak, also got in the game. Multi therapeutics in the works ...

Thanks for the helpful response! In the future, I will use one or the other. Any thoughts regarding the efficacy of the saline solution?

Thanks

Try reading this post about using salt.
Anyway, if i can remember right, a saline solution has less efficiency than sprinkling salt crystals. Maybe you should ask Hyppie - the author of the thread i've just referred - about this issue.
