Cool. My blue rtv seemed to work fine (they were out of red). I was planning on ordering some SFDs anyways so... Something I've been doing to rinse my grains is using a dollar store black plastic pail with many small holes drilled in the bottom. Pretty much just a big colander with tiny holes. Set it flat it the sink, let it fill up, swirl it around with a big spoon, drain and repeat til clear. The pail fits perfect in my stock pot, like a double boiler, for soak and heating then just pull it out and drain, shaking every 10 like you said. Then I dump it out on a towel to finish drying.

I rinse it. Simmer it and put it in a 5 gallon paint strainer. hang that up above my sink and walk away for 30-60 mins come back, load up and finish er up.

I use a mash-ton from my homebrew gear for grain straining and straining straw.
Its a 6 gallon plastic buckey with tons of holes drilled in it. Cheap & easy

Frank, do you have any tips for rye, or can you recommend a good rye grain tek? I have a lot of rye berries and can't afford birdseed.

Like zMan said, it doesn't get much better than RR's rye prep.
I recently got some rye berries for sclerotia production and I immediately remembered why everyone likes rye more than WBS. So easy to get perfect.

 Nice writeup Frank. I do pretty much the same thing. on the simmer/steep i Leave the water right under boiling I dont want it boiling and let it steep like that for about 10-15 mins stirring and looking for bursted grains, once everything looks hydrated ill sqish a grain to test. Never Preped my own rye but never needed too as this tek and WBS kick ass.

Sorry, I usually try to use the full words the first time in my paragraphs and then the abbrvs. I get kinda baked before I post sometimes and forget though... it happens.

No doubt Frank. Its not "leave it on for 2 mins to long and the WBS is useless" type deal lol

It modifies the pH and adds a bit of a nute boost.
Which nutes exactly, i don't know. Nitrogen for sure though.
It speeds colonization along nicely vs no coffee.
