WBS Prep. Question
    #3429694 - 11/30/04 08:03 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I have soaked my WBS for about 24 hours , drained and rinsed it. I plan to simmer it before I jar it. Then I will PC and then inoc. it. However, I need to know if it is okay to let it sit for awhile after it has been soaked and drained, before I simmer and PC it. I am not able to work on it right away. Would it be okay to leave it overnight? I know WBS stores dry forever, I am just wondering if it can sit a bit after being soaked/drained. Also, I have heard of people preping and pcing the WBS jars, then waiting a day or so to inoculate when they had the time. Is this okay? Let me know what you guys think about both actions. Thanks.

if you have to let it sit for 2 days, you really need to simmer it. if it sits for 2 days contams are going to thrive to the point of smelling, and maybe even eating your nutes. maybe you should just throw that out, and do some more when you have more time.

What about sitting for 24 hours dry then being simmered and PCed? I know it isnt the best idea but just curious. Also, is there any way to tell if it has passed the point of being safe to use? My other question is, I hear some people say it is okay to just rinse , simmer, rinse, and PC, no soaking. This would work for me alse. What do you guys think? Thanks for the tips so far.

the whole point of the 24 hour soak is to germinate the endospores.. leaving it out wouldn't be too prudent. its contam city. simmer it atleast... i'd throw it out myself.

THIS ONE NEVER FAILED ME

You can soak WBS as long as you want, so long as it doesnt ferment, sprout, or rot. A day or 2, or even 3 is fine. There is no need to simmer.

I have used jars that were soaked/rinsed and then set for a day(24 hours)with no problems. If they smell anything other than a slight fermentation-I would toss them.

Never failed with this!

AGar or anyone,

Why is it bad when grain sprouts? My rye started sprouting after 24 hours soaking, next time ill do that shorter.
The were not open yet but on the points of the rye you could see the tiny tiny "mini root" forming. Will the jars be succesfull?

hey guys, i have many bacteria problems with my WBS jars.
my PC doesnt have "PSI" on it. it's simple like a pot.
So i set the heat on 2,5 and after 10 minutes that the water is boiling and i here a sound from the PC i set the heat to 1,5. and then i let the WBS jars for an hour.
Maybe i should let them more? or maybe i should set the heat to higher than 1,5?

thanks

what is 1,5?

do pressure cook longer if you think its the problem. i pressure cook pf jars half hour, popcorn 1 hour, and what i consider dirty grain (not for human consumption (like birdseed) 90 mins.

Because them little tiny baby plants will consume the nutes real fast leaving very little for the mushies , also once you do sterilize them , those baby plants you killed will begin to rot in an anerobic(in a "semi" sealed jar) enviro , thus bettering your chances of contams setting in after a colony starts to take hold .
Just beginnig to sprout as you described "should" be okay .

The jars look rather nice but NO colonisation at all.
I blame the syringe now cause neither Karo nor Pf cake shows any growth.

After 12 days.

Vendor will send me new syringe...... Always cool if ill be making my own syringe some day
