I put my seeds in a pillow case after dumping, and throw it in the dryer after tying it, it helps to pull any coffee off the seeds and jumpstarts the drying process

use any lid that fits the jar. you will also need 1 hole for gas exchange. how you filter that hole is up to you.

Years later, and I still prefer this WBS tek after trying some others. I prepare my rye the same way, just less rinses (3 instead of 5) and more tolerant to a quick boil.
My excuse for not keeping the floaters: Feed nature. Squirrels, birds, etc. do not have the easiest lives and they love that stuff - and I feel better about giving it to them once it has been rinsed off well.
That being said, it's totally fine to keep those once-unwanted grains in your final mix, but this is WBS, it's cheap already, and I find the consistency is better without floaters, and any black in the jars is just bad for the mind.
I laugh, because the OP is so old, but it literally took me 10 years to find the place that sells bird seed in my area without corn.
It was fucking Walmart. I hate them as a corporation so I go out of my way not to shop there. But I literally hit every other store in my area within a 12 mile radius and no bueno!
8$ for 20lb bag, 14-16$ for 40-50lb bags.
Home depot has the worst bird seed selection I've ever seen, here at least.
My only "hmm" to this is in regards to the "small handful of gypsum" which should suffice, but in the interest of saving what is left of my lab grade gypsum (Home Depot didn't have any gypsum this time, either) knowing how much exactly is needed would be ideal. I'm thinking 1/4th a cup.
Still the greatest, Frank.

Your birdseed appears to contain more oats, which are darker in color.
Looks fine though.

Yea I use Pennington's Classic and same...
Oats galore?
I guess they are a tad wet but I wouldn't fret too much, they look better after a day typically just make sure the bottoms are not pooling.
What kind of bird seed is that?

Its a German Brand, Packet says millet, Milo, oats, wheat and sunflower seeds (which I removed). It was the only Bird seed I could find that resembled the ones in teks. There is no pooling at the bottom, I will inoculate tomorrow I guess :P

Yea, just be careful not to use a lot of LC/inoculant when already moist like that, or it could pool the bottoms.
Seen a lot of jars colonize not at perfect capacity, so long as they weren't visibly wet and pooling all it ever did for me was slow things down a bit, and invite contams but it looks like you did a decent job on your lids so you should be fine.
Good luck

If you were using proper sterile technique you have nothing to worry about.
Sleight of hand is an important trait in this hobby, I've gotten away with hundreds if not thousands of inoculations in open air by "being fast" ; though this is not recommended in a SAB as it creates air movement, defying the point of a SAB.
My point is, if your air quality isn't absolutely terrible, there is still a large chance of ending up with clean spawn.
If I was you I would look into liquid inoculant & newer liquid culture TEKs, as well as Pastyplates to get you going on agar.
Tyvek arm sleeves are nice for SAB work.
And yes, using too many spores, not good. With spores, less is more.

Not going to allow mushboy to derail threads anymore, permanently ignored. I aim to be helpful and insightful and I am not exempt to continuing to learn myself. If I am wrong, show me the error in my ways so that I don't misinform others. That is what I would do for anyone looking to learn.

i dont use a smuvbox
dont take anything anyone says as gold. especially if they opt out of ratings and talk about open air inoculations and sugar lcs.

Just to clarify with "alot of spores" I mean maybe half a milliter each jar, which is still more than the 3-8 Drops, but still isnt that much :P
