Achieving enlightenment
    #12037368 -

I'm going to put some stuff in this thread that many will find fault with and prod at, but I'm going to do the best I can to say what I want to say without too much assumption or confusion.  I feel like the word has been tossed around a lot by people who believe to know what it means.  This post is not a profession of what I believe the word to mean, but is rather meant to counteract what I think are some exaggerations about what enlightenment is.

Three Virtues (no order, all equal, these are as much virtues as indicators, as some who are not purposely cultivating them may find themselves enlightened without trying or knowing any different):

Honesty - I mean by this, the ability to say what has happened no matter what "personal" connection it has to you without fear or regret.

Awareness - Awareness is nothing

Humility - I mean by this, treating all people and things as being equal to yourself.

What is enlightenment?

Enlightenment is not the absence of want.  The absence of want is a symptom of enlightenment.

Enlightenment is not the absence of thought.  The absence of thought is a symptom of enlightenment.

Enlightenment is not freedom from fear, anger, and hate.  Freedom from fear, anger, and hate are symptoms of enlightenment.

How do I achieve enlightenment?
I don't know.  I think a good place to start would be to begin to get into the habit of questioning absolutely everything you believe, think, read, and write, until you literally exaust your thoughts so much that the stream slows down steadily.  Also, you need to know that you cannot conceptualize what enlightenment is, and if you do, you will loose it.  Remember when you were on Dog Time at the end of your last acid trip?  Remember how you said, "That was a great trip, man"?  Remember how you didn't question it?  Remember how you did question it and settled on the idea that it wasn't just a trip?  Either way, you remember how you brought yourself down.

You will never end your ability to think, but you can end your ability to become lost in thought.  Enlightenment is not like crossing a finish line where you get past and you're done and the race is over.  Enlightenment is like a race with a finish line that lets you get close enough to see, maybe even touch, but if you haven't had the appropriate conditioning reaching the finish line is a meaningless event.  When you are enlightened, you won't think, but it won't be because you can't, it will be because you have shown yourself you have no hunger to think.

A rolling stone gathers no moss.  The moss is stagnation, pointed focus, belief, opinion, preference, you name it, its moss.  Word, not world, is the greatest burden.  World is no burden without word.

Questions:

Do you think that it seems like the good in this world balances out the bad?  Do you think this is because there is good and bad in balance, or because you've created two categories in which you divide all things, which are equal without judgement, into two groups?  Is "out there" divided or are you the divisor?

Can't think of an answer right now. Why do you think we're all equal?

I enjoyed reading the OP. Thank you for not claiming your own enlightenment before saying all that. That always turns me away from finishing reading the thread.

If I may add my .02, the question of whether we're equal or not comes from seeing yourself as separate from everyone/thing else.
You are NOT separate from other 'things'. I enjoy the question of 'Where do you end and where do I begin?' I mean on a global scale-- the energy from the sun entering grass which feeds the cow and ends up in "you" as molecules, proteins...
Your exhale becomes a tree's inhale, and the exhale of the tree comes to me, delivering vital oxygen to "me".

We're all equal because EVERYTHING is everything else. Morality, ethics, humanism, it is all nothing but inventions of a madman trying to figure out his purpose.

Nice post and I completely agree with this tactic.  I think a lot of beginning meditators perhaps think that one ought to forcibly remove thought by trying to get rid of it; I say try to think as much as possible and see what happens.

In order to say that we aren't I would need a standard for comparison.  What is yours?

xFrockx has inspired me to write.
Everyone seems to think that drugs are responsible for bad occurrences, and sadly they are right. Drugs are the number one source for violent crimes around the world. When I hear people talk about drugs these days its usually someone who is claiming to be a christian or they usually are someone with a work title like manager or c.e.o. or Sgt. so and so etc... This is the part that really pisses me off because those same people are on drugs which were just manufactured 20 or 30 years ago. there has only been minimal research on most of the FDA approved drugs  and those drugs are not only terrible for you, they also are very expensive and over prescribed. p.c.s have been around since the beginning of time as far as I know. that is thousands of years worth of research and Trials and some times if you know what you are looking for you can fond this type of medication in the dirt. to me  thats pretty cheap.
Now that I've said all that. I just had my first shroom experience a week ago. I bought the shrooms because theres no way in Hades that I am eating fresh mushies from shit. not that there's anything wrong with eating shit, if you are in to that. Its your world man! but I noticed something about my attitude a few days after the shroom doce. Prior to the experience I was quite depressed, I always heard that you should not trip in such a mood but I am one of those types that takes chances, I figured I am already trapped in a state of depression so wtf right? The day after I tripped is when I noticed a small change in my attitude. I was still a little hung over from the six beers I drank while lightly trippin. the next day after the hangover was sure to be completely overcome It seemed that I felt a greater appreciation for my wife,(another wtf) I already love her. now I feel as if I should ask for a do over; from day 1. I know this is not normal for me! you just have to try and trust me. also I noticed that all the emotional static that was causing subconscious unrest was no longer a hindrance to my thinking. I did not take the shrooms for some psycadelic experience. I wanted to see if they were evil. You see, I am a christian.I am probably not the stereo typical christian you see going to church on sunday. I am the church. I am not sitting in the pullpit pointing my finger at someone. I tell people how much I love them. So I conclude that shrooms are not evil. nor is cannabis. I do not feel that either of these is an enlightening substance. If you search for enlightenment in these materials then I would gather that you will eventually realize
it is not in there. I don't think that in this state of being anyone will find enlightenmemt in the sense that they desire it in. I have noticed though how some will say that this substance is the way to that place in their mind(Terrance Mckeneh, Timothy Leary, Etc...) I also noticed how they sometimes discard Biblical doctrine to explain their experiences.I have heard their long winded descriptions of how they acquired and now posses some ancient knowledge. don't get me wrong here,I am not saying that they are crazy or wrong about what they felt or saw or both. Just observing the oddity of how some people interpret what they experience on this stuff. I don't think its the shrooms though. I think its the brain washing government. whether by ommision or commission they seemed determined to keep the U.S. off anything beneficial. and really determined to put us on some bad shit. I don't think the government is worried about mass enlightenment; which tells me that its not about whats in the plant that they dont want us to have. Its more than likely the right to have the plant itself.
My Brother is one of the people who take prescription meds. He takes them because he has a bad anxiety problem. I have noticed that he still has anxiety problems and they don't seem to be getting any better. he has been on some of these med for 10 yrs or so. I totally blame the government and the food and drug admin for what ever happens to him. And if some thing should happen to him that is directly related to the prescribed drug he is on, there will be retaliation. From a real Christian perspective I truly believe God gave us these plants as a gift; to experience what its like to be able to peak into heaven. Peace and Love to you who read these words. May the grace of God be on you all.

In the future try breaking up this wall of text into paragraphs.  Many of us won't read this and you'll get less responses.

there will be retaliation.

Oh really? What did you have in mind hot shot?
